iCloud doesn't back up SMS?

So earlier today I restored my iPhone 4 to 5.0.1 (was on 5.0), and to my lack of surprise the SMS didn't get synced from iCloud. The Apple website mentions that SMS get backed up to iCloud, but it doesn't seem to be the case...

I'm a little confused on how you restore to 5.0.1 from 5.0.0, wouldn't that be more like updating?

I know for a fact that iCloud does indeed back-up texts. I've have restored from iCloud a few times and each time they were restored along with everything else.

Are you sure you did a recent back-up? Are all your other settings and data as recent as the messages that didn't get synced?

iCloud doesn't individual save each section of your settings, except for certain apps. The rest are backed up in a bundle. The SMS is included in there, backup from iCloud is suppose to be the same as iTunes, except for the location.

Maybe I did something incorrectly?? I always thought that iCloud backed everything up on its own, and would restore the app backups in the background, but I guess I was wrong... It appears that the app info wasn't restored either (I only had a handful of apps that I picked in the iCloud settings that I wanted backed up). After I did a restore to 5.0.1, and didn't restore from backup in iTunes (made it as a new phone), I enabled iCloud backup instead, and was hoping that it would restore everything from that, but the only thing that got restored were the calendar, weather app (oddly), and contacts...

If you restored to new and then did a backup, it will only save the info that's present there. You have to restore from backup in iTunes, not new or else you will lose everything. The backup will save the current state of the phone at the time you do the backup.
