Why is the iCloud Drive folder taking so much space on my MacBook Pro? I thought everything was supposed to sit in the cloud and not take unnecessary storage space? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

I have that checked, I just bought this MacBook yesterday, could something be wrong with it?
iCloud Drive will arbitrarily download data to your computer, even with the "optimize" setting enabled. That's just how it works, there's nothing wrong with your computer.

First of all, optimize storage option starts removing your files from the internal drive when a certain percentage of the drive fills up. For example, if all your files take half of the available drive space, it won’t remove anything.

In any case, the optimization removes the less frequently used files first. On a new machine, there is no way OS can know which file you use more and which one you use less. So my guess is that the OS may be trying to copy all your iCloud files before learning which files are used more frequently than others. Just give it a little time.

I don’t understand, it’s filling up my hard drive with all my cloud stuff, I have over 1tb of stuff on there. Currently my computer is down to only 37gb available.

May want to use something more like OneDrive or Dropbox or even Google Drive and use selective sync or better yet --- OneDrive's Files on Demand feature.

I love Apple, but Microsoft's OneDrive is light-years ahead. I use it for most of my cloud storage. (Office 365 - Myself and my wife + mother in law get 1TB of OneDrive storage each for $99/year).

I have only been happy with iPhoto's Optimize Storage on my iPad and iPhone. Keeps the space at least 50% free on my 64GB iPad and only a few GB on my iPhone so far.
