So how does one access files he dropped into i cloud drive on his mac, on his phone?

You need an app that can access the iCloud drive. So for docs you need Pages, power points you need Keynote, etc. still waiting to hear about stuff like videos. I'm sure more will come after the next event when iCloud drive goes into full swing.
