Some of my iCloud messages that come to me are randomly getting removed from my account; they aren't in the trash or any other folders for that matter. I see them come across on my iPhone and laptop, but then as soon as I open the Mail program to open them, they are no longer there.

    Any ideas?

Yup. This is a long-standing issue with iCloud mail. It's happened to me before - I've seen emails pop into my inbox and go poof! It's hard to trust iCloud email, and Apple has been completely silent about it. While the offending phrase below was subsequently allowed, the problem persists. The issue for me isn't that they do filter emails...that I appreciate. It's that they just silently filter them and don't put them in the Junk folder. Gmail at least throws the junk in the Spam folder so I can go through it once in a while and determine for myself if it's worthy of deletion.

    Ever find a solution

I have been having this same problem. Specifically the emails from my kids' school. I've even added the address to my VIP list and their emails often (but not always) disappear. I realize it's a year since anyone last posted on this top, but I'm wondering if anyone has a solution...

Just to give update: as of May 2016, this still is happening.

I even tested it with a number of popular forums (cars, etc.) and I never even received the activation emails. But the moment I use Google Mail, it work just fine.

Bottom line: If you rely on iCloud for important emails, work or personal, do NOT use iCloud email.

I am now in the process of moving back to Gmail.

Same reason I've slowly transitioned away to use my own domain with a custom email addy.

With what I have tried so far, yes. I have Hotmail before and got so many spams I moved to Yahoo Mail. Yahoo Mail is turning like Hotmail, so I used Gmail when I got the invite (2005?). Then finally iCloud. Now back to Gmail.

Still have all 3 mail services and found Gmail the most reliable and better in Spam management.

FWIW, Outlook.com is very different from the old Hotmail. I've been using it for a couple of years now and am still quite happy. And I get very little spam.

What I find really annoying about Gmail is that they still don't have real aliases, and that their IMAP implementation doesn't quite work quite like everybody else's (due the the way they handle labels). Apart from that they are very reliable though.
