Lions, iOS 5, and the Cloud ... oh my!

This will be such a long keynote as covering Lion alone could be the whole keynote. I'm much more interested in Lion and where Apple is going on the desktop OS. Microsoft appears to want one OS for PCs to tablets and one for phones. No doubt OSX and iOS will merge so Apple only supports one code base. 2013 will be the debut of that beast. That is if we're all still here. :)

I'm pretty surprised by Apple's banner for this year's WWDC. The previous banners were more of a teaser, and for this year it's WWDC = A + B + C. They pretty much lay it out for you!

Also the press release last week, they mentioned iCloud a week before WWDC.

What happened to Apple's secretive nature? I'm guessing they are doing this so Apple fans have less expectation, and less people are disappointed. Bad PR isn't good for stock.

They are banking enough noise obscuring what iCloud really is.
In hindsight it always makes perfect sense.

Edit: Question
Is the any sign of the iTunes Logo(s) on any of the posters?

Am i the only one thinking it says "5" not "iOS5" .... so there could still be an iPhone 5.

Funny... I thought the same thing. Who knows what Apple has up their sleeves. Anyways, on Monday we find out one way or another.

I don't think I saw this posted yet as most people have been focusing on the iCloud icon, but has anyone else noticed the Lion icon? At first glance I thought it was the standard image of the DVD, but upon closer inspection, it reminded me of the App Store and iTunes icons. I do not think I have ever seen OS X signified in this way. Apple has always used either the stylized X or an image of the DVD (which may not exist for this os).

I have to say I am not too keen on the idea of downloading a 4 GB os if it is the only option available. Release day traffic (unless Apple has some crazy bandwidth that they have yet to demonstrate) will likely result in 3 hour+ downloads even on decent connections. It is far faster for me to drive to the Apple Store and buy the DVD (or better yet, get it the morning of the release before the store opens via UPS)

It seems like Apple has great design taste for pretty much everything except their online services graphics.

Looks like they're upholding that grand tradition.

Really? It's not really mind-blowing (what icon is), but I think it's descriptive (cloud), clear, and modern. I like it more than say, iPhoto or even Mail.

I guess they could've gone the glossy colorful look, like MobileMe.

iOS 3 came out with the iPhone 3GS.
iOS 4 came out with the iPhone 4.
So why not iPhone 5 coming out with iOS5 ??

I think you might be.

But it's actually iOS 5, just like the WWDC '11 invitation states. "Steve Jobs will talk about Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud".

iPhone 5 won't come out with iOS 5 because iOS 5 hasn't gone out for beta yet. But you will probably see iOS 5 and iPhone 5 released during the September iPod Event.

OS X Lion also has circular User icons and AirDrop icons. Maybe it's a design motif they're trying to push, much as reflections, glossiness, rounded corners, outer space, etc.

Yes, this year seems jam-packed! I think it will be a WWDC to remember.

I too am curious about where the various OSs and devices are headed. Windows 8 seems typical Microsoft. Put something out just because you can, not because you should or because it's ready. No integration, no modification of the Windows 7 UI, blind multitasking, etc. You can bet if/when Apple does this, it will blow everyone away and be a hallmark moment, like the 2007 iPhone announcement. 2011 + 2 years seems about right. With Lion, we are seeing inklings of how the software can be unified. But I just don't see any glimpse of what the hardware will look like - if it will change at all.

Steve Jobs knocked on-display Multitouch for laptops, but I wonder if he seriously doesn't think there's potential for a unified device - or if there's some huge outside-the-box thing I'm not imagining.

I wonder which clip art they stole this one from. Looks nothing more than a weather map symbol.

If you love this icon, you really have low expectations in life.

You're obviously not a designer. Simple yet strong is always more successful.

That doesnt make any sense at all.....

Major iOS releases are always given to developers first as betas so they can update their apps. So there's no way iOS 5 will be released on Monday. Announced, and released 3-4 months later, like every other release.

Dude, look at his statement and then mine, then come back if you still havnt figured it out.....

Dude, what he said (or was trying to say) makes sense. It was worded poorly, but he was saying that if the iPhone 5 were to come out at WWDC, it wouldn't have iOS 5 on it. This is true.

Sounds like they are intentionally keeping interest in the launch.
I hope they just show iTunes running on linux! That would make me happy, then I could throw away my windows machine and never have to go back to microsoft.

I'm taking a wild guess here:

I believe that it has to do with Apple's current size. Back in the day they could afford to be secretive and surprise their customers and stock holders, because for the most part all their stock holders were big fans of the company no matter what, same with the customers. Now Apple is big and their customers are just about everyone since most people in their markets own at least a couple Apple products. This doesn't afford them the nimble and secretive moves and announcements Apple used to be able to do.

Note: I pulled this out of my ass. I really have no idea, but it's a possibility. Anyone with real knowledge of big business want to comment on my thought?

I think there is a very limited range of information that can be keep under wraps any more. I still think there will be surprises.
