My work's IT tried to add a shared Microsoft/Outlook email account to my Mac Mail app manually. For whatever reason this did not work, but it was still added as a new Internet Account but classified as an Exchange account which is 'Inactive'. There is no way which has been found to make it 'Active'.

The trouble I am having is that when I have iCloud Keychain turned on (on my Mac) it will not stop continually adding this same inactive email to Internet Accounts, to the point where I had to go through and delete over 100 of them. The only way to stop it is to turn Keychain off in iCloud settings on my Mac.

I have tried looking on Keychain (in Utilities) on my Mac but I cannot identify the offending account, despite searching. I have also tried turning off Keychain on my iPhone and even removing my iPhone from iCloud, but that made no difference and the offending account is not listed in my iPhone's email accounts or passwords.

I would be very grateful if anyone could recommend a fix.

aethix, did you manage to find a resolution for this and if so, do you mind sharing what you did?

Try this, as I just resolved a similar issue with old IMAP accounts...

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Go to Internet Accounts
    1. Make note of the accounts that you would like to remove (usually by email or domain)
    2. As an additional note, there may be an Advanced button located at the bottom right after select the account. When selecting advanced you can make note of additional information related to that account.
  3. Open Keychain Access
    1. CMD+Spacebar and type "Keychain Access"
  4. When Keychain Access is opened, go to the Menu Bar and select View, then enable "Show Invisible Items"
  5. Next, in the search bar, at the top right, enter the information for bullet 2.1 and 2.2. You may just add the domain information (i.e. yourdomain.com or the entire address). You should find something that resembles the following: com.apple.account.SMTP.accountsync
    1. In this case you are specifically looking for your specific domain or specific email accounts you no longer want, and they end with "accountsync" as shown above.
    2. Delete these entries
  6. If this does not work, then there is a possibility you have Keychain set to Sync in iCloud and therefore you should uncheck that option on each device you have that set for (i.e. all macs and iOS devices).
    1. After this is done, go back to your Mac and perform step 5 again.
    2. Then enable Keychain sync for iCloud for all devices and you should be set...
