  1. How do you delete every iMessage attachment (photo and video) from the cloud?
    - When I delete it on the iPhone, it only seems to delete it locally and remains in the Cloud or on my iPad
  2. Attachments still do not seem to sync between devices, only texts?
    - I delete a photo on my iPhone, but the photo still remains on my iPad / MacBook Pro
  3. There are certain photos / videos, which simply refuse to delete!
I click on the details of a conversation, select the attachments, which I want to delete - but the delete button does NOTHING! This has been going on since iOS 13 or earlier. There is literally a 1,8 GB video "stuck" in one of the threads with my family and I cannot delete it
  4. Inconsistency among the reported "used storage" by iCloud Messages or conversations
Settings > iPhone Storage > Messages shows 151 MB. However, the detailed view (documents) claim that Photos currently use 22 MB, Videos 26 MB and Others 98 but when I check, it is EMPTY

Also, it makes no sense that the settings claim that there are no Photo attachments, when there are clearly photos in the Messages App itself.

  • It is even worse in the iCloud storage report:
The overview shows 1,43 GB but the details show 1,85 GB??? Neither matches the local storage report on my iPhone

The 1,45 GB is most likely due to the video, which refuses to delete but then it should also show the 1+ GB on the local storage?

I thought I was on my own with this one.

I've been trying to delete all the pictures/attachments from my messages, but retain the text.

What a complete nightmare.

You just can't bulk delete them from the phone. I can select a batch, and then most just sit there and don't delete.

I am currently going through the setting/iphone storage/messages and deleting them from there, but again, why no "select all" button, you have to tap on each one and then it still only shows some.

It's slow and clunky and just doesn't seem to work.

Like you I have "other" which is taking up 400mb but shows nothing.

Had same problem. I had 2.1GB in iCloud, that can not be deleted.
So I called apple support twice, we tried everything and on the end I had to Disable & Delete iMessages in iCloud and now I am waiting that 30 days passes. Then they will be deleted from iCloud, no other way is possible.

Not to knock on iCloud, but I moved all my stuff to google photos a while back. I know not everyone is a fan of google but I found this product to be wonderful.

Helps keep my local storage from syncing indefinitely with the cloud. I can delete it from local and it will still be in cloud … and the same way around.

That doesn’t really help with iCloud Messages tho. I am not complaining about iCloud Photos, that works fine for me

This thread is about messages only.

Contacos, yesterday I thought did it and started to delete some of the messages at the bottom of my screen when I scrolled done.

To my surprise, messages I deleted years ago started to appear !!! Almost like there isn’t enough room to display them all until you make room , but also concerning that I deleted these and they came back.

I did a huge cull yesterday but my phone reports my messages are 5gb, my MacBook reports them at 11gb and my iMac says 9gb.

So much for staying in sync plus I still have images I simply cannot delete …..

yes, that is exactly what is happening to me across MacBook, iPhone or iPad.

For instance, the other day I deleted all attachments on my MacBook (at least i thought so) but when i checked the messaging app itself, i still saw attached photos in some conversations. So i went to delete those attachments and suddenly a very old image popped up, that was previously no where to be seen and cannot be deleted either, nor does this photo appear on my iPad or iPhone.

A friend of mine also has the issue of not being able to delete attached photos but she does not even use iCloud Messages!

If I remember correctly Messages in iCloud was delayed back in iOS 13 days because it wasn't ready for prime time...
One could argue that it never became ready. I have issues with it as well. Not to mention the messages sync to Apple Watch is a nightmare.

Back when announced at WWDC I was super excited to finally keep everything in sync and backed up... I would still be excited for that. I guess until then..
