iCloud photo app question

I have currently put some photos on the iCloud. My setting include to leave originals on the mac, one thing I noticed is when I deleted the photos on the cloud it deleted from the max. Is this a correct behaviour?

Is there no way to setup so the originals stay in mac and only the photos in iCloud are deleted? I thought by deleting int he cloud the originals would still stay on the mac.

That's how icloud photo library is designed to work. It was simply intended as a means of syncing photos amongst all your devices, not as a way of backing them up.
