Photo stream doesn't put anything on my mac though. It's completely internet based and is limited to 1000 photos.

Exactly towards the sync thing. If I delete an email that has push it deletes it on all my other devices as well.

Huh? Photostream pushes every single photo I take on my iPhone and iPad into iPhoto on my Mac and automatically creates monthly Photostream albums that permanently remains on your Mac. It has done this for me for the last four years.

The 1000 photos rule does not apply to your Mac or Windows PC computer, only for iDevices.

Are you sure you even have Photostream turned on in your iPhoto? It's all detailed in their FAQ: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201317

Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to download all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically.

Too little too late. Sticking to OneDrive for photo backup. 200GB for free.

Still have a sour taste in my mouth from the no 32gb iPhone 6.

Microsoft have started an unlimited storage option as a preview for selected users on office 365.. I have it as part of my subscription.. They gave me 10TB.. Yes you read that correctly.. 10 Terabytes and sent me an email to say that if I needed more to let them know and they would add another 10TB.. This is all for 9.99. Month with office 365 and that is for 5 users!!!! Each. They will be releasing to the public soon..

My iPhoto library is 185gb so I was disgusted to find out Photos is going to keep optimized versions on my 16gb device. If I delete a photo on my phone it's gone from my mac also. This is the worst thing apple has done in a long time.. They should have just called it MobileMe 2.0 and then apologised for it at a later date. €700 for a phone €1300 for a mac and there's this nonsense to deal with when I want to sync photos?

Why did they go for an all or nothing solution. You should be able to delete from your device without it affecting the cloud. A preference in the photos settings called 'Delete from Library' and another setting called 'Delete from this device only' would have solved the problem. Or a non synced part of the Photos app for large libraries.

There you go Tim and Jony, you can have that one for free.

OH and while I'm at it... Bring back Events please. I don't feel like scrolling through years of photos to find what I want. Photos is an unmitigated disaster compared to iPhoto.

Great, it immediately starts uploading my existing (iPhoto) photo's to the cloud, and my iPhone starts syncing. So what is the use of the cloud if my 16GB iPhone tries to sync with the 20GB cloud that has now been filled up by the photo app?

So Apple can sell you a 64g iPhone. ;)

Not quite all I need to know:

1) After I take a photo on my iPhone, what happens when I delete that picture from my iPhone? (Right now I have to delete it from Camera Roll and my Photo Stream independently.)

2) Do albums sync across devices? Right now, I'd love to be able to create a new album on my iPad, add pictures to it from Photo Stream or photos I upload from the SD card of my camera (via the dongle) and have that album appear on my Mac and iPhone. (Unfortunately, the sync now works only one way, from Mac to iOS. It would be nice to finish or at least get started on an album of vacation photos while I am on vacation, instead of waiting to get back home or recreate one on my Mac.)

3) Pretty common question on this thread: My iPhoto library is pretty large. Is there any limit to how much storage space my iPhone would allocate to the library? (I don't want to fill up my phone storage solely with pictures from years ago. If I wanted to carry them with me, I would have synced more albums to my iPhone.)

I expect iCloud Photo Library will work similarly, if not identically: On iOS a thumbnail of everything, larger images of items that are actually opened and viewed. If available storage starts to dwindle, the higher-res versions of the least-frequently viewed items will be removed until they're called for again. On Mac, a complete cache of everything, at full resolution.
That is roughly my guess as well, but the devil is in the details. I wonder how Apple will define "storage start[ing] to dwindle". I don't have full confidence that it will not give me an error message that says I cannot download a big new app or upgrade to a iOS9 due to lack of storage space.

Considering my iPhoto library is 60GB, I'll think I'll pass on iCloud Photo Library. At least they let you just keep things on a Mac and use it like it was iPhoto. At least I sure hope so.

I really don't care if my old photos are on my phone, though it's stupid that you can adjust what your phone stores (like everything within the last X months or something).

Currently our Aperture photo library consists of over 95,000 photos approximately 345 GB. I don't mind spending the 10 bucks a month for 500 gigs of iCloud storage my concern is can photos handle that many photos and what would be the best way to manage this. And deleting the photos would not be a good choice for my health or marriage

What about Flickr? 1TB for FREE (!). Hard to beat that price. I would love to see Photos app using Flickr free space.

Exactly! I looked at all of the other options and yes, Flickr, IMO beat them all. The phone app is smooth...there's an iPad app now...it uses FB for access (for those family members on there since I'm not)...and like you said, 1TB for free. Given the low cost of disk these days and the monstrous size of Apple, they can EASILY give us 1TB free and smoke all the other competition out of the water.

Now...if Amazon Prime would create a better app similar to Flickr and create an easier option for sharing with friends + family, I would consider using them as I'm already getting the space as part of my membership.

Is there something in the new photos app to allow just local syncing if I don't want to use iCloud? Right now photo syncing has been a mess since Yosemite/iOS 8. I have duplicates in my phone and all. I'm hoping photos fixes that.

1) Right now when I plug my phone into computer iPhoto pops up and I choose to import my pictures into my library. Is this an option in photos?
2)Will photos import my old library from iPhoto which contains my old synced photos?

...and like you said, 1TB for free.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. If you don't care about what you are giving up, that is all fine, but "free" is only half the story.

However, I do believe Apple customers pay high enough hardware margins to deserve a better user experience that would come with 32GB entry level iPhones & iPads, along with more than a puny 5GB of iCloud storage for backups and photo syncing.

I have a lot of questions but I can answer a couple. There was someone who was wondering how the optimized storage can still work if their icloud space is greater than their storage on their phone.

I've been using the Photos for Mac for a couple weeks already and can tell u optimizing any other device is the way to go. Select Download to Mac in the Mac preferences in the Photos app. That way u still have full res somewhere. I have a 180gb photo library in icloud right now and a 64 gb iPhone 6. With Optimize my iPhone turned on the library takes up anywhere from 2-4 GB. It's when u start editing videos and photos that that number grows bigger because it then downloads in full resolution those pics and videos. How does it get rid of them after to continue conserving space? I don't know. That's my question. Once it downloads it to my knowledge it doesn't delete the full resolution pic or video off the device. And don't hit delete because that'll delete it from icloud. But Optimizing it will take a 20gb photo library and easily be able to fit it on a 16gb iPhone. Just don't download your whole library!

Good to know! I have a 16gb iPhone and about 15gb of photos on my Mac.

What if I want to only keep my photos on my Mac and not in the cloud? Does Photos allow for that?

As far as I can tell

1) No, which I think it's a bit annoying

2) Yes.

thanks for the reply. so regarding the first question, i.e. syncing new photos from iphone/ipad to photos, how does it work? can i only get photos to sync via icloud? which means that i'd have to subscribe to a storage plan about the 20gb i have right now. or is there some other way?

Here we are, 15 years since the launch of iTools (which became .Mac, then MobileMe, and finally iCloud), and Apple still can't seem to figure out how to make an online service that "just works."

I think I'll stick with Flicker for sharing those albums I want to actually share, Aperture for managing local-stored libraries, and Dropbox for cheap syncing of select folders between devices. I never liked iPhoto and am glad they've improved on that. Looking forward to trying Photo's after more pro features are added back in a year or two.

If your original files are held in the iPhoto "Masters" folder, how do you delete the iPhoto app and the iPhoto library without losing all your master files?

worst software ever

sorry this software is terrible. The only thing yes it is noticeable faster. Rest of the features are silly. I'm sticking with old iphoto and Aperture for now. Most likely will have to move to Lightroom. WHY :apple:

Steve would say, WHO DESIGNED THIS CRA|D ?? and fired that a hole.
