Apple's iCloud Private Relay option is not working for some users, according to Apple's System Status page. The feature is experiencing an outage and is unavailable at the current time.

According to Apple, the outage started at 11:40 a.m. Pacific Time and it is ongoing. Those who are having iCloud Private Relay issues may have received a notification letting them know that the feature is currently down, but will be re-enabled when it's back up and working.

On Apple devices, going to the iCloud Private Relay setting shows that it is temporarily unavailable due to a technical problem.

iCloud Private Relay is an Apple service that ensures Safari traffic leaving an iPhone, iPad, or Mac is encrypted. It uses two separate internet relays to ensure that companies cannot access personal information like IP address, location, and browsing information to create a detailed profile about you.

iCloud Private Relay is accessible to anyone with a paid iCloud account, priced starting at $0.99 per month.

9:35 PM ET US - Apple still reporting it's down on status.

Too beta for me. Also, my first thought, changes Safari routing Only. My experience, changes all routing. Apps that work without iCloud Privacy Relay now fail. Off it goes until more stable.

This seems to affect Mail Privacy Protection, even though I have Private Relay set to disabled. Mail comes up with "Your network preferences prevent content from loading privately" and remote content failed to load. However, on my Pi-Hole I can see requests to domains that belongs to those remote content.

Private relay is such a terrible feature to have on by default as it isn’t ready for gen pop yet or throughly tested, it can cause your device to miss important phone calls and messages due to delay in re-route or like today’s example server issue’s, just turn it off people.

Down for me as well. It is still in beta so...

edit: according to the status report by apple it is resolved. Turning it of and then back on again worked.

Working again for me, yesterday was annoying to say the least with content not loading.

I think it only applies to Safari?

Interestingly Safari has started to become usable for me.
Wonder what they did or is it a trap.

Edit. Its a trap.

Yes, I have seen such Notifications in the past. There are times when I connect to a network in which the Private Relay doesn’t work and it’ll also notify me when it can re-enable itself. Now, whether one gets these notifications consistently, I don’t know.
It notified my iPhone last night that it was working and I verified that it was, and it still is. But I only received a notification on my MBP that it was down and it still is, even though the Apple System Status page says it's resolved.

My Netgear router is incompatible with Relay. That has to be an Apple issue right? Any other “VPN” type app works fine, but not Relay for some reason.

This is one of those features that I'm glad is available in case I have to use a dodgy untrusted network, but would never leave on all the time. It just makes routing less efficient and adds latency to everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Private Relay is a really great feature, however is it really a suitable option for a dodgy untrusted network when it only works on Safari internet traffic? What about your mail app & other apps? Also what about photos/cloud (maybe these are already encrypted?).

I hope they expand Private Relay to system wide protection but I’m not holding my breath.

Yesterday I got many, many messages on my iPhone that it was down and up and down and up. If it continues today I am just going to turn it off.

He said the firefox dont use it. So he tested firefox and safari speeds and didn’t notice differences.
Here's the proof:

The slower upload speed is due to the distance I am from the router and the WiFi channel.

If I move closer to the router, or connect Ethernet to the router, upload and download are pretty much the same.

Results also vary depending on the different servers.

I'm a little surprised there's no option to disable http (not https) traffic entirely when Private Relay has been activated but is unavailable.

(I know Private Relay solves more than https does, and I'd actually prefer to have everything but Messages go down when PR isn't available. But I realize others won't want that, and you can't add an option for everything.)
