And what about the "old-timers?" All my itunes and app store purchases are under a mac.com email address as my ID. My Mobile Me sign-ins are associated with a me.com address. (The mac.com domain no longer functions for actual email, and hasn't for years.) It's my understanding that Apple won't even consolidate these two types of accounts!

Hopefully the cloud can be under my me.com login and it will recognize my purchased music as being owned by me by virtue of the fact is resides in iTunes on my computer, and having two different logins won't matter.

Any input?

That is correct. I had my me account for a while and never used it to purchase anything as i had an older account that I always used for purchases. I can stay signed into my old account for the itunes store and then backup those apps into the cloud with my me account.

if you go into your apple account settings (after making the @me email address) and add the @me address to your apple account, then you should be able to login with it

i don't quite follow. is the .mac account the same as your current .me account? I was name@mac.com. When they transitioned over to @me that got changed to name@me.com. All my purchases were under .mac but when apple made the changeover, the become interchangeable. In fact, I log into the iTunes store or app store with name@me.com but once logged in, it still shows the account as name@mac.com. Not sure why they never converted this. Anyway, point is .mac and .me are the same.

Thus, if you upgrade to iOS 5, use the apple id name@me.com you already have. Then, if you want a different one for iCloud create it. Or just use the same one.

This thread is a little confusing?!

I have an iTunes ID (username@gmail.com) which I have used to buy ALL my content, EVER, off iTunes.

I also have a MobileMe (username@me.com) ID which I have used in the past just to sync my Contacts & Calendar to my iPhone.

Which ID am I supposed to use with iCloud?!

@me. When you go to login for first time, use the @me and it will upgrade it to an iCloud account - but same email address.

Because most people who have MobileMe accounts probably started their iTunes accounts long before they joined MobileMe. They've got all kinds of purchases under their non-me.com address, but their iCloud account is their me.com address. They therefore have no access to their past iTunes purchases through iCloud.

I suppose I was the contrarian having had accounts on AppleLink, eWorld, iTools, .Mac, MobileMe, and as of today iCloud. I used my mac.com address way back when to setup my iTunes account.
For me, @mac.com, & @me.com have been interchangeable for months.

holy crap I'm so glad I'm not the only one thats confused!!

So, Lets see if I'm getting this right. You can change your current Apple ID but you can't do it with an ME account, and you can't somehow link your ME account to your current Apple ID, but you are left with a useless icon in icloud.com ?

Can anyone please verify this?

What a headache. I overshadowed a Craniotomy today, and I swear to god that was much easier than this.

I had an apple ID (with my gmail) years before I had an iPhone because I downloaded some music and some iPod classic games. I got mobile me when I got my iPhone 3G a few years ago but I continued to use my gmail to download all my apps over the next 3 years.

So If I start using the @me address now what does that mean for my several years worth of iTunes purchases?

this is all very UN Apple-like...a seamless and easy user experience is their hallmark.

quick question, my Gmail account is my primary email address and Apple ID, now obviously when I try to make my new iCloud @me.com address my primary Apple ID it tells me I cant....but my question is, if this is because my me.com address is a separate Apple ID of its own then why does it allow me to have my me.com address as my secondary email for my Apple ID account?

Surely if its a separate ID of its own, it shouldnt be able to act as my primary or secondary email address for my current ID?

As things are i can sign in to me apple ID with either my me.com or my gmail address, I would like to make me.com the only address and have away with the gmail one altogether.

......so am I correct on this: I use my @me.com to sign into iCloud but I can carry on using my @gmail.com to sign into the App Store and buy stuff?

I have a mac.com email address and it still receives email. I just tried it right now. It still receives mail regularly, even though it's not my main address.
