my wife has icloud contacts and google contacts and whatever was on her sim when she added it. so when she goes on icloud, what contacts get synced? all of them? only the ones in icloud?

when she adds a new contact will that show up on icloud, google, both?

i'm totally confused. she just wants to use the web to edit her contacts.

when i set up my 4s i added my contacts via google exchange. when I edit/add to my contacts on my phone, it shows up in gmail. i suppose this could be a fall back solution for her but i'm thinking icloud is supposed to be able to do this.

we both share an itunes account but she has her own icloud login. when i log into MY icloud account, HER contacts showed up. what is going on?

what i've noticed is that she has part of her contacts from her sim and part from google. icloud only has those on her sim (just figured this out). how do i get them all on one service?

at this point i'm wondering wtf icloud is good for. should I just have my wife manage her contacts via gmail instead? this solution works for me.

you can use either or both. if you are used to google that would work. icloud is a bit handier as it will backup your data do emails calendars and notes. Plus if you have to replace your phone you can restore it in the store and be good to go right away
google won't save pics and ringtones that you have for contacts.

is there a way for icloud to backup all my contacts, not just the ones from a sim?

I'd like to see Apple take responsibly and publish a comprehensive tutorial which explains how to setup all aspects of iCloud. So far they have done too little. As a result confusion runs rampant.

    It's as though it's top secret :D

your iphone only uses contacts that are on the phone. so you want to import them from your sim and then icloud will back them up as long as you have sync contacts.

    ----------

that would make life too easy.

I agree with that!!! "It just works" is the biggest falsehood of 2011. I finally have some things working, but there were so many tries to get it done that I have no idea how to do it again ( and neither do Apple support or Genuses). I gave up on document storage and sharing and continue to use Dropbox. Every now and then something (iCloud or WiFi sync) duplicates all my contacts on every device. Apple still won't let me combine my default .me ID with my original Apple ID. Buying MobileMe and getting that second ID was the worst mistake of my life.

The last thing I wanted was a hobby making these things work. I just wanted a simple system that worked like old Steve described. Apple has definitely taken a big step towards becoming the new MSoft. I just want to use my iPhone, iPad, macbook pro, and iMac, not become some kind of stressed slave to them. 'Cuse me while I step off the treadmill!

    You mean like this? http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/

Or like when you click "help" on icloud.com to get here? http://help.apple.com/icloud/index.html?localePath=English.lproj

Or just go into Settings/System Preferences -> iCloud and just figure it out on your own like everyone else did?

none of those links cover the multitude of errors and issues that have been reported by iCloud users, both MAC and PC (especially the dumb Control Panel for Windows).

I wish! I bought an iCloud ebook when O'Rielly had their sale, haven't gotten too far in it yet. For some reason nothing I put in the calendar on the phone goes to iCloud but it goes the other way. Ugh

diane143 check Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar> and scroll all the way down to default calendar and make sure it's set to your iCloud calendar.

To be clear, I've read everything Apple has published on their site. It's far from comprehensive.

"just figure it out on your own like everyone else did?"

This statement is a reflection of those who will go to great lengths to let Apple off the hook. The "Apple can do no wrong" attitude is highly misplaced. How quickly the same people that drone on about "It Just Works" are the same ones willing to put up with any failure that Apple delivers.

I had no trouble figuring everything out on my own because everything was super self-explanatory. I've looked over Apple's training documents for retail store employees, and it taught me nothing I didn't already know. I've never had any error messages that didn't tell me exactly what the problem was and/or how to fix it.

What is it that you don't get or are having trouble with? Maybe I can explain it to you, or find a support article talking about it.
