I hope someone can help me understand this. If imessages on my phone is only using 913mb locally, how could imessages on icloud be using 8.4gb? Shouldn't what I have on my phone be the same as what is in icloud? What can I do to fix this?

Icloud says imessages is 8.4gb, but on my phone it says imessages is only 913mb locally.

Perfectly normal. Messages on iOS will offload attachments & older messages; they're stored on iCloud exclusively.
Ok, so to cut down my icloud imessages storage size would I want to turn off and delete the 8.4gb of icloud storage for imessages, then turn it back on and when it backs up again will it probably be smaller in size?
Or does that mean imessages really is 8.4gb on my phone so to speak, and i need to start deleting text messages?
Also, is icloud storing text messages that I deleted from my phone?

Out of curiosity, why do you want to change what’s happening? iCloud is basically freeing up storage space on your iPhone. I’m actually having an opposite problem - I wish I could direct even more of my locally stored iMessages to iCloud to free up my iPhone storage.

That's the same thing happening for me on Messages on a smaller scale. Given I have the basic iCloud 5GB, having so much stored there is a concern both in Messages and my iPhone backup. I wish there was a way to clean out the cache for Messages and delete specific backups for my iPhone (as they also take up a lot of space) in iCloud itself.
To be honest I haven't tinkered with it yet since I made this topic, got caught up in other things in life. It just doesn't make sense to me, I don't see the point of chewing up backup space if its really not needed or possibly accurate.
