Hi there,

This seems like a trivial thing but I can't sign out of iCloud on a laptop. Now, the account I am trying to sign out of is my daughter's account. She's 11, and is registered with Apple as a minor. I'm the "organizer/parent", meaning I get to monitor her usage and approve what she can and can't do. I went to her iCloud settings and removed the device from the list of devices where she's logged in. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro Late 2012
OS: Catalina

The reason you can't sign out is stated next to the exclamation icon. You need to sign in to verify your account before Apple will let you sign out. This proves it's you and makes your computer a trusted device. Otherwise, a random person could sign out from iCloud to remove the activation lock or turn off Find My.

I'm afraid that's not the case. That exclamation point appeared once I removed the device from her iCloud settings. In other words, the button was grayed out before the exclamation. Attached is the updated screenshot after I added the device back to her iCloud.

Of course the button was displayed when you removed her from iCloud. That's because you disassociated that machine from her iCloud. I am pretty certain that if you Update the AppleID settings as asked, the device will become trusted again and you'll be able to sign out.

But I did exactly that. The second screenshot up there was taken after I updated Apple ID settings that we see in the first screenshot. Yet the sign-out button remained grayed out.

You have to keep clicking the Continue button and updating the settings until it's satisfied that you are who you say you are. It will ask you to prove that you know passwords for several devices. So click continue...

I did what it asked me to do for as long as it kept asking me. The second screenshot shows that there is no continue button. It cleared. It's gone.

Give it 24 to 48 hours. I once had to wait after "reauthenticating" because I'd made a number of changes to the account and devices within a short period.

A flurry of changes like that is exactly what one would expect when an account or device is compromised.

Things somehow sorted out. Even with the exclamation point present, I was able to sign out. What preceded it? I don't know, frankly. I did many things many times. The problem was the laptop for sure, because at one point other devices starting to sync, but the laptop wouldn't. Eventually, after one of the many restarts, it magically appeared. Down below is the screenshot. Thanks to everyone who helped.
