Over the past several months, Apple has raised its prices for some or all iCloud+ storage plans in 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt, Tanzania, and the Philippines. The updated prices for each of these countries are listed in a support document on Apple's website.

In Japan, for example, prices have increased by around 15%.

Storage TierOld PricingNew Pricing
50GB¥130¥150
200GB¥400¥450
2TB¥1300¥1500
6TB¥3900¥4500
12TB¥7900¥9000
Local currencies in many of the affected countries have declined against the U.S. dollar over the past few years, and that is likely the underlying reason for the price increases. iCloud+ prices in the U.S. have not changed this year.

iCloud+ plans provide users with extra storage beyond the 5GB of free storage included with iCloud by default. The plans also include some other perks, such as iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, and HomeKit Secure Video.

I wish that Apple would offer a discount if you purchase iCloud storage on an annual basis

Many companies that charge $9.99 a month charge around $99.99 for the whole year so you get a 20% discount

$9.99 a month is what Apple charges for the 2 TB plan which is the one I have and I would much rather it be billed on an annual basis

Totally agree. I prefer to pay upfront if the savings are worth it. Apple already offers this option for other services.

You could just create your own 20% discount by buying Apple gift cards when they go on sale.

Target had their Buy a $100 Apple gift card, get a $15 Target gift card offer late last month. If you have a credit card that's giving 5% cash back on Target purchases for the current quarter (e.g. Discover card; Chase Freedom via PayPal payment at Target.com), that is a 20% discount on iCloud... presuming you shop at Target and can use the $15 Target gift card.

Surely they got it the wrong way around, Storage should be increasing for the same price?

Also, 10GB should be free. It's shocking how much confusion the tiny 5GB threshold creates for non-tech users.

"My phone says it's not saving because I don't have enough iClouds?"

Yeah they really need to bump the storage available on each tier. As well as offer an annual discount. Their storage pricing is a really bizarre offering it’s just not good value these days at all

It doesn't really have to be competitive because it's the only way to back up iOS devices over the air.

Well, this make sense if their goal is to increase revenue. Increasing free storage gains them nothing, but increases expense substantially.

The only reason they would have to give away more free storage is to earn goodwill from customers. Apple knows they have their customers by the balls since they have repeatedly removed features while increasing prices. That hasn't stopped people from buying.

Agreed, I would totally pay up front for a year if there were savings involved.

With that logic, I'd rather pay upfront for a year's iCloud at a discounted rate and then pay via gift cards..

Considering how bloody incredibly stingy Apple is with storage capacities, they should be decreasing the prices each year, not upping them. Storage gets cheaper over time, it doesn't get more expensive each year for the same damn capacity.
But inflation

I just don't understand if iPhones are 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB how we have to choose 50, 200, or 2 TB. Raise the prices but let the storage amount make sense. I like the private relay and other features integrated into iCloud+, maybe they can add AI features to make the price increases worthwhile.

Just to correct people's misconceptions:

Storage is indeed really cheap but you're not just paying for storage. You're paying for transferring that data. That is expensive and consumes most of that cost. Consider AWS as an example of a pricing model which makes sense (but is excessively expensive). Apple use S3 behind the scenes for some stuff.

Storing 1TB in S3 = $24.58/month

Uploading 1TB to S3 = $0

Downloading 1TB from S3 to anywhere on Internet = $92

Now big providers have some hefty discounts on top of that but the biggest cost is not the storage but the transfer. The financial model that they develop involves negotiating hefty discounts, operating the storage and front end and actually paying people on top of it. The costs incurred here are due to geopolitical impacts driving up transit costs and currency exchange issues.

When you're not not paying iCloud sort of money for things, you're paying for the lowest bidder, the lowest storage redundancy and the lowest quality that be mustered without getting sued. It's only your data they are storing 🤷

(Incidentally we have seen data loss in OneDrive before, the veritable "hooky kebab shop" of cloud storage)

I'm not mad at the prices, which are not extremely bad, but I'm mad at no plan between 200GB and 2TB.

This is a particularly evil increment. I need more than 200GB but nowhere close to 2TB.

Oh well since I pay for it - I'm just dumping a lot of stuff there for convenience because I have the space, but it stinks there's not a mid-tier step. Then again, knowing Apple they would add-in a 1TB tier for 'just' $8.99.
