In many cases, especially in business, they literally already are. So, yes.
I'm so old I remember when the whole point of a Personal Computer was so that an individual had a complete, stand-alone computer - complete with software and storage - rather than a a dumb keyboard connected to a mainframe somewhere else (connected by network cabling or the vagaries of phone lines).

Now it appears everyone wants to go back to those pre-PC days.

I work with a lot of guys who are a decade or two older than me and they’ve made this comment quite a lot recently. I didn’t start using computers until the 90s (Windows 95 - as a kid I did use 3.11) - so I didn’t get to experience the Unix terminals. But it is interesting how we’re going backwards using dumb terminals as a throughput to servers again - you’re right.

Apple's emense store of cash is not large enough???? So they are devising new ways to charge for every thing they can. Somehow, there ought to be some folks working at the higher levels in Apple that are stressed out to live on a budget that is being squeezed from all sides. Have some customer sympathy....

Apple's customer base do not own printing presses to print our paper we call cash so when the credit cards are maxed out and even the penny jar is empty, Apple's overpriced items will become art work on the store shelves. No Apple product is essential to life.
You’re contributing $50/yr just for an ad-free experience on MR, but Apple extending limits for their iCloud+ subscribers is an issue? Considering how resource-intensive each of those requests is?

Certain Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27 will carry daily usage limits, with iCloud+ subscribers receiving higher allowances than free users.

The company reiterated the details in its press release accompanying yesterday's Apple Intelligence announcements. Apple said the limits apply to features that rely on "powerful server models," with image generation cited as the primary example. According to Apple, increased access will be available with most iCloud+ subscription plans.

The phrase "most iCloud+ plans" suggests the cheapest tier, priced at $0.99 per month, may not qualify for the higher limits. Subscribers on any higher iCloud+ tier, or those with an Apple One bundle, appear to be in line for expanded access to advanced AI image generation and potentially other server-reliant features.

iCloud+ subscribers will also gain additional benefits in the Home app, including upgraded support for HomeKit Secure Video on compatible smart cameras.

I suppose Apple AI is intended for the Apple ecosystem only and isn't really an option for Windows users?

I missed the word "most" in the presentation. I have no problem with paying 99 cents per month for a few services, but 50 GB in 2026 seems a bit stingy. Apple had plenty of time to increase its storage capacity before A.I. caused HD and SSD prices to go up.

After years of manually backing up photos, I eventually gave in and got the 2TB iCloud tier, would've been fine with 1TB but oh well, I do wish it were cheaper still..

I was a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) product owner/user so we had VT-100 terminals that could switch between several "jobs" that were running on my PDP-11/73 or my Vax 730. It was a control key combo like Ctrl W 1 or 2 or 3 depending on the jobs. My office building got hit by lightning (some on the outside said it looked like a bowl of cream were poured over the building) and I had half of floor 7 or 8. All the terminals lost diodes due to the surge in the building wiring and the computers had issues as well as I remember.

So yes, we are full speed ahead to yesterday technology where all the data is where big government wants it for surveillance - on the central computer.

A saying from yesteryear "Sleep tight your government is watching (you) tonight"

What are these limits? And which Apple Intelligence features have limits?
The NYT reported “Apple will impose daily limits on how often people can use a feature that generates images using A.I., because it requires so much computing power. People can use the feature more by paying for a subscription to Apple’s cloud computing system, iCloud.”
(from pay-walled NYT Article Apple Reveals New A.I.-Powered Version of Its Siri Digital Assistant).

Maybe these are image generation features requiring more than 12GB RAM on iPhones and for which processing has to be handed off to Apple’s and Google’s PCC servers. I am just guessing.

I have no interest in Apple Intelligence (ever the oxymoron), and I pay the utmost lowest for the 'additional' 50GB iCloud storage (if only to support the continued bloat of iOS and its needed backups - though cheapest tier should at least match that found on base iPhone), and I also make a point of not storing anything essential (or sensitive) on it or any cloud storage platforms.

Whatever files of mine are in iCloud (plus aforementioned essential or sensitive stuff) backed up locally on multiple devices. This includes the non-proprietary file storage of my Photos - nor do I rely on iCloud for their storage.
