First off I'm using a Mac mini 2011 as my HTPC and have over 300 tv episodes and several movies all purchased through iTunes. After the 1080p announcement last week I was interested in getting the best version for every file in my library. So I selected "prefer 1080p download" from the preferences and when I began to delete a tv series and download the 1080p version from the "not on this computer" purchased screen I noticed that when it was completed it still showed all the episodes as being available for download on the purchased screen. I was confused because prior to this it would just show the episodes I purchased through my apple tv that I hadn't downloaded to my computer yet. I thought it was just a bug, but soon realized I was only downloading the 1080p HD version and it is the SD version of each download that is available for download.

My question is, do I actually need the SD version anymore? If I want to put an episode on my iPhone I just click the episode under "purchases" on the iTunes app and it gives me the option to download the HD or SD version of it. I don't know if Apple intended for this to happen, but I can't tell you how happy I am that the stupid SD version doesn't automatically download anymore, which ends up saving a ton of space on my hard drive.

Looking at it another way, do I need to download the HD version if I plan on streaming my purchases to an Apple TV3? After "cutting the Cable" and relying on iTunes season passes and movies for all my viewing content (I use Netflix too),storage of all this is always a concern. Should I download just the SD version of each episode and movie to keep as a back up for the days when the apple tv or iTunes store go down, and stream the content through my apple tv? Not sure which idea I like more. Any input would be welcome. Thanks.
