It's for an application that shows the differences between the iPhone 3G/S screen and the Retina Display on the new iPhone 4

    Thoughts?

Simple is good. I like it but I do see a couple things I would clean up. On the handle of the magnifying glass I see some brown splotches near the corner. The upper left inside glass area to the glass frame is a bit jagged and while this may be showing the jagged edges of the old displays, it for me makes it look dirty. (it may be due to the graphic as shown here and your file may not show this)

Ah, the jagged edge. I didn't notice that. Because I masked around where the "a" is and added a mosaic smart filter! The pixels are because the layer should be shifted a bit. Thanks for that.

One thing I would suggest is to make the magnifying glass more realistic. You have a dark inner shadow all around which gives it no sense of depth, wheras there should be some sort of highlight/shadow from the lighting. You could also consider putting a white overlay on the glass to give the glass convex volume.

My suggestion, if you want another idea for the design, would be to have a forward slash dividing the letter which pixelation/desaturation on one side and normal view on the other. Usually iphone app icons tend have symbols and shapes rather than 3d objects that exist in dock icons (for example preview).

Have you looked at this when it's at icon size?

The magnifying glass almost disappears and the pixels on the tail of the 'a' are smooth!

And why is the tile made of wood?

Your application is all about technology. Your icon should reflect that.

Added gloss, changed some of the mag glass settings, removed the pixelated edge whilst making the corner more pixelated

But you are again showing it at an enlarged size.

Show it at the actual iPhone icon size so we can more accurately judge it.

And I would like you to explain the wood texture.

Why wood? What does that say about your app?

    Why an 'a'?

    And not an eye?

Well I can't get it on the ******** phone because I'm not a registered dev...
Wood texture? It looks nice. And the 'a'? Because thats the function of the application. Do you want a video?

Sure. It'll help knowing more about the app now that we're redesigning its icon. ;)

Strap a crash helmet on your feelings

Comments for the reduced (actual) size icon:
    1. Wood grain does not look as appealing
    2. Magnifying glass gets lost; should probably cover nearly half the icon
    Comments about the app demo:
    1. I don't get it. Why? Why would anyone want this?
