apple want's developers to call the application icon "icon.png". naming the image whatever developers choose will work just as well, so it seems. is there any solid reason why developers should name the file "icon.png", or is this just more arbitrary, nonsensical control-freakishness on apple's part?

maybe good for them in the future, also to adhere to certain naming conventions they have
probably better for them to have everyone name it same thing

Actually, the file name is "Icon.png", with a capital I. But the reason they suggest it, I feel, is that if you do name it this you don't need to mess with the .plist file for your app to use it. It's the default!

At a guess I would say the latter. It's barely an issue though is it to be honest...
