Do I need to have Windows formatted a certain way to change the icon on the desktop in OSX?
If you use the default NTFS format, you can't write the icon to the disk. However, the workaround is simple.
Attach the custom icon you want to a FAT formatted USB key, reboot to Windows and copy over the icon .VolumeIcon.icns to the Windows drive.
Voila custom icon.
