Icons from PSD file

Hey guys,

I recently downloaded the kobhens icons set and i there was also a PSD template that was available to make custom icons. I have searched near and far for a tutorial explaining how to create those text type icons using that psd file.

I have never used photoshop and am using pixelmator to edit the PSD file. Can anyone please point me to a link or let me know the steps for how to edit the psd file to create an icon?
