Hello. I'm using my friend's Macbook and none of her icons in the applications folder are appearing correctly. (i.e. iTunes is picture of a trashcan etc.).

Is a quick fix possible?

The first thing I'd try is to restart the Finder – select 'Force Quit' from under your Apple Menu, select 'Finder' and click the Restart button. I had this happen to me a few times back when I was using Panther and this method always did the trick for me.

Neither of the above options made any difference.

I'm using OSX V 10.4.8

Font icons and others are not looking right and files will not open?

Can't add fonts with corrupted to suitcase, tried copying a font icon that works to a non recognised font, but still did not work although it now carries a trutype font icon?

I've have this problem before and cured it by working from desktop and not a server, but this is not making any difference either. My hard drive has been replaced and formatted as a journaled drive on my powerbook G4 and after re-installing all software, updating through to 10.4.8 and always repairing permissions the drive just does not like some file types?

Not sure how to fix this now, so any further suggestions are more than welcome.

Cruiserman, talk us through what you did with your system. Did you install third party fonts? What other third party stuff do you have installed? If you open a new user account, does that account have the same problems? :)
