how come only some of my icons on my desktop(and in other places for that matter). like a video or picture, show a preview and some just show the little mp4 icons or whatever?

Sometimes it takes a while for the preview to get processed by Finder. For me, if there's no preview it usually means a corrupt or otherwise non-native file. If Quicktime can't play it, it won't preview.
