I'd like to become outdated before my computer

Hello all, I'm getting ready to buy my last computer (because of my age and $). I've always had a Mac as my own personal computer but have been in the Public school system for the past 15yrs and forced to use Windows. My present Mac is a PPC2500 that can't run System X. Will the new Intel processor be a large enough leap in technology to warrant waiting for it? The computer will be used in recording and live music performances. Also web development and gaming (yes, old geezers game😀). After the system X burn (two months after I purchased the PPC) I really need to do the right thing for me. I'd like to become outdated before my computer
