the right not to participate in their service.
If that is the case, the OP can create an account with an email address made for use just for said site.Unfortunately, there is no alternative way to register or login to an online account with the US Internal Revenue Service.
Trivial? There's nothing trivial about removing a secure way to log in. It was a stupid decision. It was a royal pain in the ass to get an account set up on id.me too.I see no point in getting mad over something so trivial.
This is the answer. All sign in with Apple does is make a convenient Hide my email address. You can manually make one. If there’s some additional layer of security someone please let me know, but I don’t think so.If that is the case, the OP can create an account with an email address made for use just for said site.
Wrong. First of all, hide my e-mail address was not an option for id.me, and I was fine with that. Second, Sign in with Apple has built-in 2FA, so it is secure. All sign in with Apple does is make a convenient Hide my email address.
Why wouldn’t a hide my email address work? It’s just a randomly generated iCloud email address.Wrong. First of all, hide my e-mail address was not an option for id.me, and I was fine with that.
I guess since it uses Face ID to unlock on your device.Second, Sign in with Apple has built-in 2FA, so it is secure.
It’s not difficult, but rather annoying when websites take away features that make things more convenient. It would be more annoying if it was a private website, but I’m used to this when it comes to government websites. I even see things like “your password is too long” from government websites. They are their own kind of special. Not sure why it's so difficult to re-register with one's email address and new password.

You can use login.gov to register/login to the US IRS…
I personally prefer login.gov, as it is an official government (meaning public) service, whereas id.me is some private contractor who can legally do all sorts of stuff with your personal information.
Is there another IRS page that offers login.gov? This page shows only ID.me:
IRS: Sign in or create account
They already do this. I had to create a ID.me account to do instacart or one of those delivery services like 2 years ago. They require you to download this app and they scan your drivers license and your face to make sure it's you. They do a similar thing because of the "know your customer" laws if you create a Coinbase or other crypto account. Anyway, when the IRS switched over to that I already had an account so I didn't have to do anything.Probably because they are going to start asking for photos of driver's licenses to create an account...only a matter of time.

All that said, this type of thing is invasive and intrusive but what can you do? Other than never go check your IRS account, never sign up for ride share or delivery jobs... But I suspect everyone will have to do this type of verification at some point in the future for pretty much everything.
