If that is the case, the OP can create an account with an email address made for use just for said site.
This is the answer. All sign in with Apple does is make a convenient Hide my email address. You can manually make one. If there’s some additional layer of security someone please let me know, but I don’t think so.

Anything connected to the government is going to be a PITA. Expect that. They have good idea fairies running loose in government offices, and they do things like this.

Wrong. First of all, hide my e-mail address was not an option for id.me, and I was fine with that.
Why wouldn’t a hide my email address work? It’s just a randomly generated iCloud email address.

Second, Sign in with Apple has built-in 2FA, so it is secure.
I guess since it uses Face ID to unlock on your device.

Not sure why it's so difficult to re-register with one's email address and new password.
It’s not difficult, but rather annoying when websites take away features that make things more convenient. It would be more annoying if it was a private website, but I’m used to this when it comes to government websites. I even see things like “your password is too long” from government websites. They are their own kind of special.

Unfortunately, there is no alternative way to register or login to an online account with the US Internal Revenue Service.

You can use login.gov to register/login to the US IRS…

I personally prefer login.gov, as it is an official government (meaning public) service, whereas id.me is some private contractor who can legally do all sorts of stuff with your personal information.

Is there another IRS page that offers login.gov? This page shows only ID.me:
IRS: Sign in or create account

I just signed in to the Apple Store, Veterans side, using the Apple ID.me button. Got into my SSA account using ID.me. Got into my ID.me account also.

It eludes me why anyone would want to use Google, etc., to sign into business accounts, personal accounts, or sites that are gatekeepers ( ID.me ).

Probably because they are going to start asking for photos of driver's licenses to create an account...only a matter of time.
They already do this. I had to create a ID.me account to do instacart or one of those delivery services like 2 years ago. They require you to download this app and they scan your drivers license and your face to make sure it's you. They do a similar thing because of the "know your customer" laws if you create a Coinbase or other crypto account. Anyway, when the IRS switched over to that I already had an account so I didn't have to do anything.

All that said, this type of thing is invasive and intrusive but what can you do? Other than never go check your IRS account, never sign up for ride share or delivery jobs... But I suspect everyone will have to do this type of verification at some point in the future for pretty much everything.

Well, as I said to a friend of mine. I am a veteran, hold a State CCP, a Utah CCP, and a TSA Known Traveler Number. Consequently, multiple State governments and the Federal Government have my picture, blood samples, and a wealth of other data about me.

However, I will not upload my image to Google / Facebook just out of principle; nor do they need to be the gatekeeper to my private and financial world. No social media company acts as a gatekeeper to someone's world out of the goodness of its heart.

We all draw that line, somewhere in the sand.

So I don't know ID.me, but "Sign in with $third-party-provider" means that $third-party-provider can in principle collect statistics and track where and when you sign in. Authentication methods that only require local software, like TOTP or a password manager, ensure more privacy.
