IDC's worldwide smartphone operating system market share projections: 2011 and 2015
(Platforms listed alphabetically)

A new report issued today by research firm IDC is gaining significant attention for its bold prediction that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform will surpass the iPhone in worldwide smartphone market share by 2015. The report cites the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft as being key to Windows Phone's performance, which is unsurprisingly projected to come at the expense of Nokia's own Symbian operating system that will be phased out.
Nokia's recent announcement to shift from Symbian to Windows Phone will have significant implications for the smartphone market going forward. "Up until the launch of Windows Phone 7 last year, Microsoft has steadily lost market share while other operating systems have brought forth new and appealing experiences," added Llamas. "The new alliance brings together Nokia's hardware capabilities and Windows Phone's differentiated platform. We expect the first devices to launch in 2012. By 2015, IDC expects Windows Phone to be number 2 operating system worldwide behind Android."
As for the iPhone, IDC sees the device averaging growth of 18.8% per year between 2011 and 2015, but that growth rate is predicted to be slightly lower than the overall smartphone market's growth of 19.6%. Consequently, IDC predicts that Apple's share of the smartphone market will slip slightly from 15.7% this year to 15.3% in 2015, although iOS is predicted to remain ahead of Research in Motion's BlackBerry operating system, which is predicted to slip from 14.9% to 13.7% of the market over the same period.

windows phones?

no one uses windows phones....and for a good reason too...it sucks, it sucks, oh and it sucks....

I call (early) April Fool's joke. The figures don't make any sense, and they're being given by Llamas.

Remember, having the largest market share != the best experience.

Good for MSFT if they can get back in the game. If anything I look forward to Google and MSFT battling it out. Apple needs these two to help drive their own innovation forward.

I shall come back to this prediction 4 years from now, and laugh at how dumb the prediction is.

Early April Fools...nice!

Yea, I'm not buying this neither the hook, nor the line and certainly it's a stinker.

Considering that, when the iPhone was first announced, Jobs stated he would be happy with a 1% share of the market, Apple isn't doing too badly. If MS gets their act together with the Windows phone, I can see it getting a larger share. I guess how big a share depends on how Apple and Google respond with their own innovations.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

lol. good one.

You don't have to be a fanboi to laugh at this one. WP7 may be a completely reworked experience - but it doesn't matter at this point. No one wants a Windows phone anymore.

I predict by 2015 the industry pundits will be asking when Microsoft is going to pull the plug on their Windows Phone unit.

I think this could very well be true.

The new Windows OS is surprisingly well thought out and have a lot of the features I miss in my standard iPhone 4 iOS - and only have because of Jailbreak :)

I could very well see myself buying a windows based Nokia - if they get the interior in harmony with the exterior - I still think iPhone 4 is the best looking phone I've ever owned - but still think it lacks some basic features in the iOS - like a Lock screen with calendar and weather info, basic features like changing the mail alert tone and being able to use the outer buttons as dual buttons for a shutter button on the volume button for instance (which a camera app did have, but Apple thought their consumers were too stupid and confused to have dual function buttons, so they excluded this app from appstore until they removed the function)

All the features I miss on my iPhone are very basic features, which could easily be fixed with a tiny small software update - since these features don't seem to come on the iPhone, I could see myself getting a HTC with Windows OS maybe in a HTC Desire DeLuxe chassis :)

What really keeps me true to the iPhone is all the apps :)

What a joke!!

Here were their illuminating predictions in Jan 2010.

http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS22176610

Key findings from a new IDC market outlook include the following:

Symbian will retain its leadership position worldwide throughout the forecast period. Due primarily to the strength of Nokia in markets outside of the United States, Symbian continues to lead all other mobile operating systems.

The truth is that the Nokia adoption in America is minimal but that isn't the case around the world.

In Latin America Nokia and Blackberry are the top phone brands. I can safely say that by the end of this year there will be WP7 Nokia phones available around the world and they might be a big hit just because they are already very well known for the Nokia hardware.

Who knows what will happen but believe me that it definitely has turned into a three horse race.

Bahaha, wow, they should've said that Windows Phone will be completely gone by then, now that's MORE believable!

I predict that in 2015, iOS handset users will still have the highest customer satisfaction and that Apple will be walking away with the lion's share of the smartphone industry's profits.

Meaning there will be more grumpy non-iPhone users and more grumpy HTC/Nokia/Samsung/Motorola/LG shareholders.

This forecast came from the same headless chicken that said my Margaritaville is worth 90 trillion dollars.

The Nokia/Microsoft partnership will guarantee this. It is no joke. I'm already seeing them rise in popularity, plenty shops sell them now.

And just for them who say Windows Phones are rubbish, they aren't. They are pretty damn good, although I do prefer my iPhone.
