I'm looking into ultrawides, specifically I've been looking at the 49" ultrawide options that are either 5k2k or 5k1440p. I'm confused on what to do, because one frustrating element of my Macbook m1 through my current Gigabyte M32U is that it lacks sharpness. I'm used to it now to be honest, but I've read that there's an ideal PPI where Mac's scaling works natively and correctly without having any partial/blurry scaling.

Does anyone know the details about this? I've googled extensively and it's hard to find a straight answer. I don't want to go out and get a huge screen and then need to scale down or up and have the same issue as my current screen.

(I'll also note, i just tried my M32U, which is 4k, at 1920x1080, which should be exactly 2x. But it still has a blurry appearance, like it's not quite sharp. Very confused.)

How are you connecting to the monitor? That might make a difference. And what refresh rate are you using? I have a 27" 4k monitor that supports different refresh rates. I know, in Windows anyway, that at the highest refresh rate of 144Hz that my monitor is a little blurry. But when I run it at 120Hz or 60Hz then it is solid and not blurry. Unfortunately, 4k @ 32" is not quite enough resolution to get to a non-blurry dpi. You'd need at least 5k and maybe even 6k to really get there. Getting a 49" ultra wide is only going to make that problem worse.

DisplayPort - Can you explain why 4k @ 32" has a blurry DPI? Wouldnt that be entirely dependent on the resolution used, and since 1920x1080 is exactly half of 4k, shouldn't Apple's HiDPI 2x scaling work exactly natively with the monitor?

Yes it should, but it seems the active resolution is not 4k for some reason. HDMI connection is not the case here since you mentioned DisplayPort. I suppose something like SwitchResX should help to figure out what's wrong with it.

I have the Dell U4025QW and it's great! It's 40" and effectively the same resolution as a 4K display, but with extra width.

Supports up to 120Hz refresh rate, has an integrated KVM, great color...

Downside is that it's expensive. But no regrets from me!
