I want a chat client that isnt' retarded such as adium, proteus...I want one that does it all ... like aim on PC *dare i say PC?!* I want it too do file transfers easy, video chat, audio chat, a good way of doing away messages so you can see who left you messages, and tabbed chat windows...how about that?!

How about an app that, when you run it, changes the real file names of photos in iPhoto to the names of the titles you have given them in iPhoto, without having to export and re-import them.

How about a good ol home theater app. Perfect for all those people who have mac mini's hooked up to their tv's. i know i'd like one someday.

I work at a golf driving range and the teaching pro uses a PC with golf swing analysis software. Since I'm the only on with any troubleshooting skills, he's always asking for help. I've been trying to convince him to buy a mac, but there's absolutely no software for swing analysis (basically video taping a golf swing and being able to draw lines/circles/curves over the top of the video and be able to step through it frame by frame + other extras). Examples of PC programs are: V1 Pro and MotionCoach. It's not a 'everybody will want one' market, but it is a wide open niche with no competition (and golf instructors make pretty good money!).

How about an App that only lets me view Mac Rumors for one hour each day. Maybe, I'll finish one of those projects I always wanted to do.... like take a shower.

I'll second this suggestion.. I found this thread while doing a Google search for Mac golf swing analysis tools (there are none). There are several good Windows apps to do this, but none on the Mac.

As 'crazytom' mentioned, the basics are just: displaying a video (MiniDV being the most common), with a scroller to step through frame by frame or slo-mo. Simple line/circle drawing tools over the video (to see if my head/spine is moving during the swing; or the plane of the golf club is changing).

A second stage would be things like: show two videos side by side - synching their playback (compare my swing to a pro), the ability to cut down video clips to discard dead time.

Then, to get really advanced, you could do the swing capture from firewire/miniDV. Capture a sliding window of video until you detect the thwack! of impact. Then save the 3seconds before & 1 second after that point as a swing clip.

Not an app, but I want a widget that'll display my current bank account available balance, maybe with a drawer that'll slide down to show the last 5 transactions. Something that'll save my username/login but will have security features to prevent unauthorized access to my account. Now that would be awesome, cause right now, it's like a 4 step process just to check my balance. Ideally, it'll work with most major banks that offer online access; you could always start with one bank and expand at your own pace.

a simple drag n drop calendar maker application!
my mum wanted something like this the other day (she just bought herself an ibook a couple of months ago) and i couldnt find anything for her, not even microsoft word templates....

Make an app that allows a folder to be password protected, i.e create a new folder, right click on it, and select the option password protect, you then have to put a password in a field, and there you are, that would be great!

Although not perfect, eyeHide seems like a pretty good work-around. :)

Yes...Front Row for everyone..has to work with some sort of USB remote or something though

I'll support the iSync without .Mac between two connected Macs, but i think it should evolve step by step, the first synchronization could be Finder folders, then AddressBook, later Safari bookmarks, then iCal, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto...

Another idea is a bluetooth networker, that would allow me to share my internet connection with another bluetooth enabled Mac, or access files from the network menu...

Another (simplier) idea is to develop an app that changes the system volume according to the surrounding noise, like some Alpine auto-stereos used to do.

In the same direction, an screensaver that could only be deactivated by voice recognition.

In the security area, another idea i've have is an app that would ask for your administrator password every once in a while, perhaps every two days or something not-so annoying, for those users who use their Mac in Automatic Login fashion or for those that never shutdown it, i know there used to be a similar app for the Palm platform and i loved it.

Another security idea could be an app that would start an alarm or scream really loud upon waking up in case anybody moved your Mac while in sleep mode...

In the movement sensor area, it would be awesome to develop a virtual joystick that could work by actually moving the whole Mac (it would be useful mainly for laptops).

Another idea i have is to have a force-feedback simulator that could be developed by spinning up both the cd and the hard drive while emitting low frequency tones from the speakers, it could be useful for those times when you can't use sound nor visuals(while giving a lecture, for example) but the system needs to alert you. (an example could be an iCal alarm, or an incoming call in your bluetooth phone stored in your backpack, etc.)

In the sound area, a ultrasonic emitter could be useful if you're using your 'book in a mosquito-infested area.

In the mosquito-infested theme, i could definitely use a menu bar icon scroller for all those menu items that get too crowded in my 12" screen.

Another way to save menu space in the 12", could be an app that would monitor the system and light up the numlock led (or the sleep light in the 'books) whenever some condition happens, being it a new mail, an unanswered adium message, extreme temperature in any sensor, SMART alert, low battery, iCal alarm, low/lost airport signal, it could be made to have up to three conditions with slow blink, fast blink or fully lighted.

In the temperature area, an app that would let you define the temperature at which the fan starts would be warm-welcomed i think (but obviously would need a full disclaimer).

Another app i can think of is a screen low brightness fine-adjuster, because i find that sometimes the lowest lighted setting for my iBook is still too bright, for example to read in the bed with your beloved one by your side trying to sleep.

A very useful one would be an auto scroller for those times when you are reading for example a very long post in Safari (like this one! :D ), or a long text in textedit and you don't want to click every few seconds, it could be activated by looking if the window below the mouse has a scrollbar, and if it haves, defining a scroll startup delay and a scroll rate (it could be made even better by defining the scroll speed depending on both the distance from the mouse to the title of the window and the size of the font).

Another useful app for us 'book owners would be one that would allow us to use the trackpad as an alternate input device like the wacom tablets by pressing a control key or while using an external mouse.

These are only some of the most basic ideas for new apps, please don't get me started! :D And of course all this ideas are free both like in beer as in speech, but a nice mention somewhere deep in the documentation would be most welcomed.

As someone used to say: "live long and prosper".

Here's something realisable:

Make a program that will scan your disk for any application. Then, make it connect to versiotracker or macupdate and check for the latest versions of these programs. Then, make it drain info from this site and provide links for instant access to updates for any application you have.

Don't tell me it can't be done. I have seen similar things in another application, but it was intended for cracking....

(Why the handiest applications are meant for cracking? ;))

Serious App - An M$ Project equivelant would kind of be some nice competition.

Joke App - Solitare, or in the words of Homer Simpson "a program that can download porn 3000 times faster", that would be useful

If you don't even know WHAT you want to make how can you be so sure you want to make anything at all? Wow but that's lame. What you SHOULD do is either wait until you come up with a good idea or else look around you and ask yourself if everything in your own workflow is already perfect.

And in the meantime while you're waiting for the dimes to make that lovely sound as they drop in the slot you might pick up a good book on programming or hey even enrol in an institution of higher learning and pick up a degree in it.

So you don't flood the market with any more script kiddie AppleScript "applications" that is.

And no please don't ask: SURREALbasic "apps" don't count either.

Hi, I've had the idea for an application for a while.

It is an application that would recognize all of the external drives that you connect to your Mac or PC. It would also recognize computers on the network, iPods, partitions, things like that, and organize them into one simple app. Wouldn't it be great to be able to print over the network by just dragging a file into the menu bar off to the right.

It would include a search function, kind of like the finder. You could eject drives just by clicking the eject icon to the right.

The app would make it easy to transfer pictures from one drive, camera, or iPod to another, by taking advantage of drag and drop.

What do you guys think??

iPhoto is awesome for calendar making, it has the feature built in, and you can even order it from inside the app...

why was this thread ressurected it is almost two years old.

I have no idea, but it is a good idea : ) I didn't even look at the date, it was on the front page, and I have had this idea for a bout a week, so I thought it might be a good place to put it : )

Hey everyone :),

I want to develop a new Mac app, but I'm not sure what to make! Therefore, I come asking for assistance ;). If you have any ideas you think would make a good Mac app, feel free to post them in this thread. And who knows, if I don't make an app out of your idea maybe another developer will :).

Thanks ahead of time! :D

In UK the Driving Licence system has changed to remove "paper" parts of driving licence. To hire a car a "code" is required from DVLA website. What would be very useful to UK residents is an app that remembers your access details, goes to the web site, logs in, and retrieves the code. Each code is only valid for 72 hours and is required by hire companies to confirm your driving licence details. - web site URL is https://www.viewdrivingrecord.service.gov.uk/driving-record/licence-number? - I feel sure people will pay to get tis app on iPhones etc.
