As reported by ThinkSecret, MacWorldExpo.com now reflects the new name of the summer expo which replaces MacWorld New York:


Macworld Conference & Expo proudly presents CREATE -- a unique event that will give you the opportunity to target your valuable customers in the creative arts industry including design, publishing, video and music.

These highly qualified attendees will be attending Macworld Conference & Expo's CREATE to purchase products and services, network with their peers and find the solutions to their issues. They will be looking to test drive, touch and experience the products and services that exhibitors put in front of them. Make sure you are there to showcase your company?s offerings to this dedicated audience.

eWeek confirms that the new show will no longer have a focal Keynote speech by Jobs, nor is a replacement expected. It appears Apple will be participating in this revamped expo.

First word of this dramatic change came in early March from ThinkSecret... though Apple has been threatening to withdraw from Summer Expos since February.

MacWorld Expo San Francisco is reportedly not affected by this change.

who will come?

So, MWxx is fun because lots of regular people come, and like to see the pretty toys that Apple creates.

If Apple makes it a big user conference, I wonder if those people will still come...

Its pretty obvious that apple does not need this ocnference since they will have another ocnference to unveil at this summer; WWDC. Its all coming together in a way. Apple not at Create. Apple pushing back WWDC. Apple already talking about new OS version at WWDC. Maybe a summer of apple, or more accuratley a summer of waitign for apple to ship new products.

And welcome to MR grizel, have fun.
 
yep... WWDC has moved very close to this new conference.... but WWDC has never been a consumer expo...

According to the article on Maccentral, Apple will have a very large presence at this event.
 
I wish Apple would maintain a summer expo somehow. Maybe like a much smaller but Apple sponsored event, complete with keynote and all.

I mean seriously, everyday people who don't travel to San Fran or New York don't really care about Macworld as an "expo," they just like the keynote.

Maybe, I haven't stressed enough, but I want a keynote this summer!!!!

I doubt it will happen, as this works in perfectly with Apple's plan to get away from making announcements only at expos. :(
 
As long as Apple still debuts 10.3 and/or PPC 970 for us to buy within a reasonable amount of time, I'm a happy person :)
 
This may be a sign that Apple can innovate new products and get the word out without having shows like this. Hopefully apple can have some more normalized product updates.
 
Somewhat good, I guess...

The only positive I can see from this is that it increases the chance that the 970 is announced at WWDC. It seems to me that Apple will want to announce something that big at a large event, and only a MacWorld-ish venue would work.

Could be wrong, but, at this point, I'm grasping at straws.

Really looking forward to this CREATE. Always glad for an excuse to scoot into NYC, but as a designer, this is all the more reason to go.

What does this mean for MW boston...? Is IDG still gunna have it there...? I hope that this new confrance (sp?) will we still have a wonderful keynote, to set the tone for the rest of the year? I hope that these questions will be anwsered soon, I need money for a plane ticket :D
 
weird, they moved it back to NY. so IDG folded for Apple? this sure wasn't very publicized; i'm rather confused.

i can't believe they are calling this create. that's almost as dumb as "iCreate." it doesn't have a ring to it at all, IMO.

I hear you, but it seems like they're scrambling at the last minute, more or less, to change the focus and make this happen by July. I've done some hefty organizing, and been at many trade shows, and I WOULDN'T wanna be announcing this theme switch in LATE March...

In short, I'll give 'em the simplistic name. At least we know the audience clearly. Now put on a good show for us CREATE-ives!

The keynote in NYC is one of the highlights of my summer. Further, I always thought the dual keynote introduction schedule kept Apple pressed for product introductions.

While I can justify popping up to NYC for this, there's not way I can "pop" over to SF for the new one-true-keynote.

Sigh.

apple has been shifting focus away from expo-keynotes for a while now. one of their reasons for not supporting a macworld: boston was that they wanted to get away from the twice a year, new product guarunteed schtick.

if/when the 970 is introduced, apple's product line is going to get very cloudy and very crowded. they'll be phasing G4's out of PM's and Xserves and into ibooks, they'll be phasing 970's into powerbooks, and liquidating G3 supplies. Plus they'll still have the OS-9 bootable machines to sell. Maintaining these varied and competing product lines will keep apple plenty busy on the product introduction (and price:)) front.

Xerov, let me put it this way...

I´m a Mac user, and like many others, I fight against the IT department at work to keep working with macs. I work in a newspaper, and you must know that a pc is a no substitude in a design department.
But I realize that the caracter of Steve (remember how blind was he about the NEXT computer) cause sometimes ireparable problems.. Remember, somebody lost his job for not consult him about where the next Macworld will be.

About the software and hardware... It was the bright negotiation that Bill has with IBM that let others manufacturer harware (low cost hardware) to run windows.. That´s vision!
REMEMBER! Steve kill NEXT computer

And yes.. I will keep buying Apple products, if they remain truly good and regular cost.

No, 2003 was always going to be the last MW-NY. The big tiff between IDG and Apple started (as far as we know) over IDG's plans to move the expo back to Boston in 2004. Presumably, Boston will now be getting this "Create" thing in 2004, not a MacWorld Expo. From all appearances Apple would only agree to participate in an East Coast summer show if they weren't obligated to a keynote address and product announcements. They are clearly pulling all of these activities back closer to home, where it has to be more convenient and less expensive to announce new products, and where it can be done at a more realistic pace.

This move sure does seem to increase the chances of a big announcement at WWDC. I understand the skepticism, given that WWDC is not a consumer show, but there's no reason to think that Apple could not tack a media event onto the beginning of WWDC. They've done these as free-standing events before, as with the iPod roll-out.
