In all seriousness I think if there is ever contact it will be with alien machines rather than life forms. And if those machines are remote resource harvesters, we'd be **** out of luck.

The machine theory is most likely. But I doubt we'd see "harvesters." Other than our biosphere, there is little that is unique about our planet - minerals and water can be gotten easily in much greater quantity from the asteroid belt alone.

Some scientists say aliens will never visit us because by the time they reach the techical levels needed to achieve interstellar travel, they will have off'ed themselves.
Yes, that's the "Great Filter" theory. Excellent YouTube channel called "Jean Michel Godier" and his second channel "Event Horizon" discuss these and other issues related to astrophysics and science.

For years I have always said the only reason there is so much war between humans is we have no common enemy.
The question posted by OP does not address the principle matter of whether the aliens are friendly or hostile. I think that would very much determine the outcome. Probably a threat to our very existence would unite mankind. If they came in peace, yeah I think it would be east vs west regarding who can get access to the best technology.

Nature says they would be hostile, based on what we see on this planet in the animla kingdom. But in order to achieve interstellar travel, they would have needed some semblance of unity on their own world, which indicates some level of peaceful intentions. The aliens may not be openly hostile, but they would also have their own best interests at heart. And hopefully, those interests are not st odds with ours.

Did you ever watch V in the 80s? :)
