If Apple went Chapter 11, what would happen to OS X

Apple won't die if Jobs leaves. There are hundreds of people at Apple who "Think Different". Jobs doesn't do everything himself. Nor does he design everything.

Apple will continue to strive. It won't be the same when Jobs is gone but his influence will still remain and that's all that matters.
 
Apple's existence helps keep the antitrust lawyers off of Microsoft's back. I doubt they would want to help themselves into more antitrust litigation than they're already in, ya?

Strange speculation, this.

Apple is one of the few companies which actually followed the old method for improving a company -- pay down debt.

Most companies improve the balance sheet by buying revenue, and driving up debt.

Sort of gutsy in the current stock market, or growing a company by purchasing others.

Amazing that Apple has been able to develop as many new products as they have.

Even if their stock price tanks, the only thing they have to worry about is the reaper coming in to part the company out. But not at the current valuations.
 
Microsoft would be stupid not to dump Windows and its crud and take OS X for itself if such a theoretical event occurred. As a User of Microsoft products/OS since 83 (Recent switcher in Nov 06 to a mac pro) I can safely say OS X is superior in many ways over Windows. Would be idiotic for Microsoft not to take it and run with it.


Now if it got to Opensource I doubt all of OS X can be put out as OSS, I wonder how much of the upper layers can be passed along as source.
 
For now, the premise of this thread seems highly unlikely. But, after debating whether I should even contribute to this, I figured, what the hell.

First, Apple's been close to going under, and survived. How? Partly by bring Jobs back and buying NeXT, and partly through an investment by Microsoft. Like it or not, Bill Gates is partly to thank for bringing Apple where it is now. And not just because his company fumbled with Vista. 😀

Second, if the worst DID happen and Microsoft lived while Apple died, Microsoft's chances of going with OSX and slim to none. Whatever our feelings are of Windows, it is still their bread and butter, and still the majority OS. It would be bad business sense to force everyone to switch. And as much as it may surprise people, not everyone will truly like OS X.

Third... if the worst DID happen, I'd probably just emulate the OS X look under Ubuntu. 🙂

All of it could be released if Apple wanted to, it's all code even for the upper layers, the only parts that couldn't be released as open source, are any parts that use technology Apple has liscensed from another company.

If Apple were to go bankrupt though, for them to lose that much money they would have had to mess OS X up so bad that nobody would care what happened to it and n other company would want to touch it.
