Yes, because there is no 5th gen iPod touch. This "new" iPod touch is simply a 4th gen with a new white color and with iOS 5 preinstalled. Which is why it comes out on October 12; the release date of iOS 5.

So go ahead. Buy it now if you want. There is no reason not to.

Unless you really want a white iPod Touch, then you should just purchase it now. The "new" iPod Touch is really the older iPod Touch only that comes in a Black and White version, and comes pre-installed with iOS 5. Just buy it now and update your iPod Touch to iOS 5 manually.
