    Probably but...

If you sync to iTunes beforehand, you'll have a backup of all your data including SMS conversations, recent call data, ect. So the next time you sync all that info will be put back. But make sure this is turned on (preferences) first before deleting or downgrading anything.

    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

    there should be a folder
    it is all encrypted though,
within that folder is a bunch of encrypted files,
if you open the Info.plist file you can see that it is your iPhone

No, you wont lose any of your things, photos, sms, contacts are still there.. if you sync your iphone b4

CANEHDN, he has to downgrade, then do a special update inorder to jailbreak it.

I believe that he wants to downgrade in order to jailbreak, the iPhone running 1.1.2 is stock, and we all know that we can't jailbreak at the moment without the pain of downgrading first and re-upgrading...

Personally, I would just wait until 1.1.3 comes out but then again its your phone. As long as you sync your phone thru iTunes, you wouldn't lose any of your contact information.

    Go here: www.iphone.unlock.no

This has nothing to do with this post, considering that the thread-starter is concerned with "jailbreaking" his phone, not "unlocking."

Jailbreaking at the 1.1.2 level is explained many times on this site, and others. Its relatively easy, it just has a couple steps. I have jailbroken over 50 iPhones at work, all at 1.1.2.

No need to wait. Just do it.

Ok I am getting a bit confused here :( I am searching for the easy steps to jailbreak my 1.1.2 iPhone (not unlock, as I have AT&T service). Can anyone just post the link to the thread explaining it?
    Thanks :)

    Brando,

Did you click the link??? Although the link says phone unlock, it tells you everything, unlocking, jailbreaking installing apps, bypassing activation etc etc...

    EmptyG,

That link is not jsut for unlocking the phone, I posted the link because theres a step there you can follow to jailbreak your phone.

Geeeeeeeez people, why you gotta be sensitive on everything on this site.

I can do better... Here is the process...

First, download the Conceited Software Jailbreak program here: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html

    Then download Independence here:
    http://code.google.com/p/independence/

And finally download the 1.1.1 restore file here: http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=6

First, sync your phone with iTunes to create a backup file.

Keeping the iPhone plugged into the computer, and having iTunes still open, press and hold both the "Home" and "Power" buttons until the screen goes black, at which point you can let go of the "Power" button but keep holding "Home."

Do this for about ten seconds, or until iTunes says that it is connected to a iPhone in restore mode.

Hold "Option," and click restore. Navigate to the iPhone restore file that we just downloaded and click OK.

The phone will downgrade and fail, this is normal so don't get scared. When the error message appears, hit OK, close iTunes, and run Independence. (don't hit anything, just open it.) This kicks the iPhone back to the "Activation Screen."

You may have to restore the settings to the iPhone, thats fine, it won't interrupt the process.

Navigate to "jailbreakme.com" with iPhone's safari browser, and click Install AppSnapp at the bottom.

After the Installer.app program is installed, click on it to open. Scroll to the "Tweaks 1.1.1" category, and install "OKtoPrep."

Quit the installer and return to iTunes. Click "Update," (not restore) and allow the iPhone to update.

After it's finished, close iTunes and navigate to the Conceited Software Jailbreak folder. Open it and click on "jailbreak.jar" install SSH if you please, and you are finished!

I take back what I said, but I still remain adamant that there is NO reason to wait for 1.1.3, I don't even know why you would say that.

    Ok last question :)

I usually sync and backup with my Windows box. I do have a MBP I can use for this process though. Is it feasible to use the Mac for this jailbreak, then sync it back with my Windows box?

Thanks for all the help! :)

Brando88 - Thanks so much for that guide! Worked perfectly :) I did lose some photos and my notes, but I had backed them up anyways. The important things like my calendar and contacts got put back on correctly.

Seems to be working really well so far. It's fun having all these new cool little apps on the iPhone.

Again, thanks so much for that post. Really cleared a lot up for me :)

Now my (maybe) last question - if I ever do decide to un-jailbreak (put the iPhone back to "the Mac genuises will actually fix my iPhone if I take it back" state) - is that easy to do? :)

No Problem, if you need anymore help just ask... And to answer your question, yes, very haha (a very good idea, if you have to go into an Apple Store).

All you have to do is hit restore in iTunes. I have heard rumor of the carrier image remaining the same, so if you've changed that, you may want to put it back to AT&T. (It's never happened to me, I just wanted to let you know.)

Again, thank you so much! Yeah I didn't change the carrier logo, no big deal to me. I really appreciate the heads up.

Ok maybe THIS is the last question!!! ;)

The one thing I cannot figure out is rearranging icons. I am using SummerBoard, which is great, but I can't find the program listed to do icon rearrangement (I think it's called rBST). Any ideas? :)

Thanks and happy holidays everyone :)
