I'm on 5.0 and tethered right now. I could update to 5.01 and restore and all that, so that I can get the untethered JB (I know a "fix" is coming for 5.0, but it's not guaranteed).

I'm completely fine with being tethered, as I don't really ever run out of battery and if I do, I'm okay with the limited functionality that comes with being in a tethered boot.

My question is whether or not it will affect me in the future? If I don't update to 5.01, will it be harder for me to get the latest updates/jailbreaks in the future?

You won't have the option to update to 5.0.1 once apple stops signing it. So be 100% sure you are fine without updating til the next jailbreak is released.

Run TinyUmbrella, save the blobs plus Apticket and you're good to go. This way you ensure that at any time you can always go to 5.0.1.

If you run iFaith you will be able to go back to 5.0.
