If I turn OFF location services, are photos still being geotagged? I want to conserve as much battery life as possible on my upcoming trip and was wondering if photos will still contain location data when I take photos on my trip if I turn OFF location services in the settings menu? (I want my photos to be geotagged)

Nope, if you look at the list of applications and the location access they have under where you turn of location services you will see Camera listed. If you go into that section you will see a note that says "App explanation: "Photos and videos will be tagged with the location where they are taken."

So I must keep location settings enabled then right?

Only for the camera app. Though to be fair, don't expect any discernible difference when you turn off location services for battery life. When traveling most of the standby usage comes from the phone having to switch to new antennas every couple of kilometers for cell coverage. Otherwise iPhones are already best in the business in preserving battery when in standby.

It’s not about standby, it’s about when I take photos on my trip, the location service will engage every time To geotag the photo that I will take which was the concern for my battery life, should I put my phone in airplane mode when im on the actual hike? (Will photos still be geotagged in airplane mode?)

I suspect that the amount of battery used to geotag a photo is negligible so its not really a concern. You'd be better off going through the other apps listed and amending what access they have to stop them using it. Its only really something like a Sat Nav app that continually uses the GPS which really hurt battery.

I'd be more inclined to pop the phone in low power mode which i think will still let you geotag and keep the battery going longer or look at a little power pack device or battery case to be able to charge your phone on the go if needed. Not 100% sure about Airplane mode, that would help in terms of it wouldnt be looking for a signal all the time so would save battery but not sure if the geotagging would still work. Test it by sticking the phone in Airplane mode, take a photo and see what happens.
