I would have gone for:
- slide down anywhere on the screen for control center
- slide up for app exit
- double tap anywhere on screen to pull up the recently opened apps with flick up to close them

The search function could be invoked by a tap and slide or two finger zoom in or out (or both). Problem solved - no reachability issues, no double handed operation (except the search function).

Better yet, I would have introduced a new gesture control customization function where you can assign pull up, pull down, double tap, tap and slide, two finger slide up, two finger slide down to anything you wish. Would have solved this no home button / poor gesture control uproar wonderfully.

I don't know for certain but I bet the control center is used more often than the search function so it only makes sense to be able to slide down to get into your controls.

Maybe some day ...

Just doesn't seem right. The way it is now is perfectly fine for 95% of its users. Apple won't change something because 5% of the users don't like.

You don't think customizability of the gestures would make it better?

so you cant access control center except on home screen?

im glad youre not the "gesture control designer"

Slide down within apps would work for the control center but only when you slide from the top.

I didn't come up with any of it, it already exists on the Android side though Nova launcher and it is awesome. Every gesture control is customizable.

Does a slide down on the home screen bring down the control center right now?

For example, you want to adjust screen brightness real fast while using the browser but you want to do it one handed:

slide up would exit the browser, slide down would bring down the control center, adjust brightness, slide up to close it, double tap to open your recently used apps, select browser, continue. All done in seconds, no second hand.

Yup. Already have that swipe down gesture on my Androids with Nova Launcher Prime. Control Center is very important to me especially the location toggle. After four years, still no toggle for it.

That's the main reason I stopped caring for the X. Not price or whatever. The taller screen for that gesture swipe down and no location toggle. If it was easier as well as tethering, then I would get it.

I would prefer swipe up or double tap for the screen to go off.

I don’t need to use two hands...? Easy to use one lol

Okay, good for you, alien hands. For a lot of us, normal folk, it's not that easy to reach the top of the screen with one hand without adjusting the grip. That's the whole point, to be able to do stuff with one hand, same grip and fast - average people, women with small hands, children, everyone.

You wouldn't do any of it within an app. You'd exit the app first just like you would normally.

I use control center numerous times when im in an app. I wouldnt like that feature cuz I would have to swipe up to exit the app, swipe down again for control center, swipe up to open the app again

The swipe down from the top, as mentioned before would stay the same within apps. You wouldn't have to exit the app. But you would have the option to close the app, swipe down from anywhere on the screen and get to the control center. From experience, it is easier and faster.

I can do that now one handed, without opening a task manager, dismissing an app to the background or switching back to the home screen to invoke a _different_ gesture behavior:

Pull down browser via Extensibility
Pull down CC now accessible at the midway point of the display
Set brightness, close CC (side or single tap)

I'm back at the original app, it wasn't dismissed to a background state, and I didn't have to invoke a task manager. :)

Note: you *always* want to avoid as many contextual UI behavior changes as possible.

then how can I scroll down?

Same way you scroll down now, no difference. You would just have an added option to pull down the control center from the main screen WITHOUT having to reach to the top of the phone.

You mean Accessibility? Yah, except that feature is so poorly implemented and you have to be so extremely precise with it, that might as well not have it.

Holy smokes, I'm not sure where I got Extensibility :D Actually, the feature is called Reachability (though it is in the Accessibility settings area)

It gets much better over time, I used it several times without a miss while we were walking in Savannah (and on our Nth drink :D).

At any rate, closing out to Home to invoke a control that's designed to run as a layer on top of the current application (vs. dismissing an app to a background state) is extremely clunky and starts overlapping into some specific OS nuts and bolts. I get what you're trying to accomplish, but that's definitely not the way.

This has already been done and it is implemented beautifully. You can get to literally any part of the OS with your thumb and never once adjust your grip or use a second hand.
