If I were Tim Cook and I watched the presentation of the Samsung Note 8 this afternoon, which is just similar to the S8+ but a bit taller and saw the price tag of 969 (999?) EUR/USD.... I would be very confident in pricing the base model iPhone 8 at 1099 EUR/USD.

But hey, I am not Tim Cook! :p:p

I'm not sure where that extreme confidence comes from.

There will be an educational and marketing shift to get consumers onboard with facial recognition. That's assuming the software is ready to go on day one.

The OLED iPhone is a glass sandwich with expensive cameras and iOS. Samsung is going for the traditional crowd who are seeking large phablets and perceived long battery life.

Aside from that, one of the main selling points with the Note is the S Pen. Both the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 have quite a few similarities, but the S pen is what really separates the Note to help complete that 'phablet' like experience with a larger display with reachability. It's other capabilities and overall functionality is something that Samsung has refined over the years, that is if someone truly intends on using the Pen for all intensive purposes.

Tim Cook could care less how much the galaxy8 costs, if they dropped the price to $200 Apple will still get a grand for the IPhone 8
While I think you’re correct, ultimately, it does make it a less bitter pill to swallow for price-comparing consumers, methinks.

I just watched the short 8min version on TheVerge of the keynote. Jesus, it's different. The Apple Keynotes are like 'dreamy', they speak slower and emphasize words when they speak. It's so different, not sure how to explain.

If I was Tim Cook watching that I would be laughing hell I was laughing watching NOT being Tim Cook :D

That keynote was embarrassing! Samsung have a way of making their keynotes super awkward. Apple don't always make the best keynotes but the Note 8 was one of the worst I've seen.

haha, my point was more after the almost 1000 USD/EUR price tag on the Note 8, Tim can take a deep breath and sticker all of his new iPhones at least $1099 (base model), with ease.

So whether you're a fan of Apple or Samsung you'll need to take out a mortgage to buy your new phone.

All this will do is drive more business for the Chinese companies targeting the mid-range with flagship-like devices. Xiaomi and OnePlus are going to love their competition demanding a grand for a bloody phone.

And of course increase demand for older flagships on the used market, eBay sellers will love it.

A smartphone, especially the newest flagship smartphone, is a luxury, not a necessity. The market destermines the price. Buy it or voice your disapproval by abstaining, but whining does no use.

Yes I will vote with my wallet by buying a cheaper phone, and if this is the direction Apple and Samsung go in I will buy all my devices used or buy from one of those Chinese OEMs who charge a fair price brand new.

Anyone who pays $1k for a phone has more money than sense frankly.

I’m sure that there are plenty of folks say the same thing about those who spend $700 for phone, or $600, or $500. A bit subjective and judgemental for my taste.

If someone deems it worthy and get lots of use out of it, I don't see the problem. The money I save by not drinking alcohol easily affords a $1k phone every year, even more so after selling my current one. But just because lots of people would spend money on something I wouldn't, I'm not going to say they have more money than sense.

$600-700 is already pushing it, but $1,000 or above is just completely taking the piss.

I remember buying an iPhone 3G for about £350 brand new. Have phone components become a more expensive scarce resource since then? No, the exact opposite. So why do iPhones now cost four figures? Pure profit. Taking the customers as mugs.

Companies will always charge whatever the highest price the market will bear. Companies exist to make profit. I get that you’re upset about a potential price hike, but that’s no reason to lose all of one’s sensibilities.

You've just agreed with me then, we have nothing further to discuss. They're upping the price to rip-off the customer and they're doing that because they know many customers are willing to pay those insane prices.

A fool and his money are easily parted... I will wait six months and buy an iPhone 8 for £400 used ;)

There's a product for everyone.

If someone has to take out a mortgage or do financing to pay for their phone, then they should question whether they can afford it.

Most smartphone manufacturers are moving upmarket. The popularity of Xiaomi and OnePlus has waned in the past couple years. Everyone in China is focusing on Huawei and the Mate 9 starts at $700.

Now I know you’ve lost it. Best of luck with that, mate.

I do not believe most customers are going to pay such a price for a smartphone, especially when the market is so saturated you can get a very good device for a fraction of these flagship prices.

Samsung is the biggest smartphone maker and yet most of their sales are not from flagships, but instead from low to mid range devices.

The market for ridiculously expensive flagships is small in the grand scheme, but then Apple has always chased after that demographic so it fits their business model.

They canned the $10k Apple Watch Edition and I have a feeling they'll be forced to do the same here but only time will tell.

Either way, I will never pay over £500 for a phone and will never have to. Even if Apple charged £5k for their new phone, they'd depreciate faster than you can crack the screen.

Compare the brand new iPhone 7 prices with the eBay prices mate. iPhones do not hold their value like they once did.

I really hate the blanket argument about market forces. People talk about the free market as though it is always right and can do no wrong. There is such a thing as price gauging. There is such a thing as ethics, which is outside the realm of economics. At what point do we stop acting as though supply and demand is completely non-ethical? Just because people are willing to pay a certain price does not mean that the price is ethically fine.

Edit: I’m speaking in general terms, by the way. I’m not really sure about dropping so much on a phone. I’ll wait and reserve my judgment. However, it will have to be very impressive for me to buy it at the rumored prices.
