If iPhone's flash memory is basically same as one of those SanDisk's flash memories, charging $100 more just for extra 16GB isn't too much?

I assume the reason is "because it will sell", but please enlighten me if there are some other reasons not related to marketing.

I thought the memory on the iPhone was "NAD" or something.

#1 no one is forcing you ro buy the 16GB #2 as long as it sells, they aren't dropping the price anytime soon.

So prices just from Amazon, 16GB CF Extreme III $86.45, 32GB CF Extreme III $185.00.....seems okay to me?

Yet another reply blindly defending APPLE right away. I was just raising a simple question without accusing APPLE of anything. I fully understand how a company sets a price.

lets see.. MACRUMORS, APPLE iPHONE... your bound to get some fanboys in here ?!

The reason for the $100 is more than just an extra 16GB. The iphone can only take ONE bank of flash memory, not 2. So you can't stick 2x 16GB chips in there it must be 1x 32GB chip. The difference in price going from single chip 16GB to single 32GB can be more than the price of 2x 16GB chips. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you for your answer. Whatever the cost difference between 16+16 vs. 32 may be, knowing that a single memory usually costs more, it makes more sense.

Well, also from Amazon a 16GB Ultra II SD is $43 and a 32GB is $100. I'm not going to be mean and do the subtracting in your face and show you, but I hope you get the point that it usually isn't $100 off. Especially at the quantity that Apple buys the much of the cost is not for the actual memory. Instead, it is usually for the body and taxes and because those don't change between 16GB and 32GB. Just saying...

Three Words: "Supply and Demand". As long as people will pay and extra $100 for the 32GB iPhone, Apple will sell it for $100 more. Even if it only costs Apple only 10 cents more.

You're welcome. I don't think any of us need to worry about Apple not making money 😀 The $100 difference is actually somewhat reasonable, if I had to guess I would say the most expensive part of the phone is the flash memory, at least in the 32GB phone.

I specifically asked for reasons not related marketing. You must think supply & demand only applies to the subject of economics. And, thanks buy no thanks for the supply & demand lesson link. I majored in economics.

If you majored in Economics, then you should know. Apple is going to sell the product for what it cost to make it plus what they consider a healthy after-tax profit. If that equals to a $100 difference, then that is what you pay.

Oh, okay. Thank you for your explanation. I now fully understand the concept of pricing.
