Everyone is guessing one way or another - the contract for the first iPhone was a two-year contract, and people got to upgrade to the 3G with the subsidy.. we have no idea what's going to happen so everyone here should lighten up.

The iPhone EDGE and iPhone 3G aren't in the same situation. iPhone EDGE owners bought the phone outright while iPhone 3G owners still effectively owe AT&T for the phone.

what?

Original iPhone users were able to upgrade their $600 phones to a subsidized phone a year later because they were not paying back an existing subsidy.

Such is not the case here.

Why don't you just calm down as we find out - no one here knows what's going to happen, not even you.

It's funny to watch the battle going on here between the people saying "it doesn't make financial sense for AT&T to just give money away to people just because they're avid about the iphone" and the people saying "but it's the iphone, you don't know what AT&T will do, they could just give them to us. It's the iPhone man." Somebody is going saying I told you so in a few minutes.

I lost/got my iphone 3g stolen a few months ago and canceled the $30 data plan.

I was wondering if i would be able to get the newly released iphone at the subsidized price when it comes out?

Well, here it is in the fine print: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTE2OTU

"For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."

It sounds like they've blown a large raspberry to existing customers. Before today, it was something like $399 to early upgrade to the 8GB and $499 to the 16GB with a new 2 year contract. (I know because I soaked my 16GB in the loo a short while ago before they added water issues to non-warranty repairs!).

When I went thru the pre-order process (http://store.apple.com/iphone), those are not the prices I was given.

I bought my iPhone 3G when it launched last year.

I appear to be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS for $399 (8gb) and $499 (16gb), which is $100 cheaper than the prices above.

Wonder if that quote Apple has on their website is wrong?

Talked with the guy that sold me my 3G. He said that if I wanted the new iPhone coming out in June/July, I would have to sign another 2-year contract on top of my remaining year. Not sure how much the phone would be (hopefully the same as new customers, but doubt it)

He seemed well educated on the matter and didn't go "um" or "let me check", he immediately stated this and seemed quite confident, but whether it's "official" or not, we'll have to wait and see.

Wow, he is a friggin expert!

Guess what, if you asked me the same question, I would have had the exact same answer without checking with anyone too!

The real mystery is the price which the sales guy doesn't know either.

;)

It says it will cost me $499 to upgrade to a 32 GB iPhone... I think I will wait until Dec when I can get it for $299. My 3G should easily last me another 6 months, and hopefully the 3GS will have most of its bugs shaken out by then.

The biggest thing I am looking forward to is the 32 GB. My 16 GB has been full since day 1. The 32 GB will hold my entire music collection with plenty of space to spare for apps/photos/etc...

Same situation and thought here! (except it's the video/improved camera that I really want) :D

You can upgrade as of June 19 but if you are not "Upgrade Eligibe" you get to pay an extra $200 above the "New Customer / Upgrade Eligible" rates.

Only if you qualify for those prices, not everyone does. Most 3G owners will not!

best check your account online or go to apple.com and try buying the new iPhone - you'll quickly see what it's going to cost you.

Wow! I can't believe it, who would have known?

Ohhh...everyone who knows how to read a basic cell phone contract.
Yes but something is wrong with this pricing as I just did an "Early upgrade" and I was offered pricing of $399 / $499 on the iPhone 3G S. I went for the 32 GB Black for $531.34 (includes est. taxes).
