This was posted in one of the apple discussion forums:"No. This question comes up every time new hardware is release, the version of OS X that originally shipped on the machine is the earliest version of OS X that can be installed. The reason being is the hardware is optimized for the version of OS X. There are rare exceptions to this rule however the iMac Retina would not be one of those exceptions." here is a good link http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201686 Not sayin it cant be done, but im not sure either!
