The number 1 complaint for the mini was no retina, not lack or speed or NFC or camera, but no retina

It would be shocking if apple didn't do it. Why would you think it would take a 3rd generation to get retina? Because the iPad? Lol. Technology escalates on case you didn't notice

A non retina resolution screen late 2013 would be embarrassing for Apple on a tablet device. Retina phone, iPad, MacBook, but no mini when that's what everyone wants? Lol

Technology may escalate, but not necessarily that quick. I'm not sure who this 'everyone' is that you're talking about. Seems to me, most of the folks here that actually own it, myself included are just fine with the current screen technology. It's not the number one complaint (for owners). It's possibly the number one request (from non owners). I'm not so sure you understand the compromise necessary pack that many pixels, and the necessary energy to drive them into a package this small. Read Anandtech's very in depth review for a better understanding of what Apple's hurdles are in order to achieve double the resolution (and maintain the same battery life, form factor and performance).

I believe you're confusing the power required for the screen itself and GPU capability to run it smoothly on the retina resolution.

Or perhaps it's you (that is confused). The screen backlight requires far more power (LED/LCD & IPS technology) to run than the GPU requires. FAR more power. The screen is the number one 'energy sucker'. Not the CPU/GPU. OLED is a little different but still an energy/power whore. While the 'mini' is only 2 inches shorter diagonally than the 'big' iPad....it represents only about half the total surface area. Not that this will correlate to exactly half the energy necessary to power the retina mini with the same duration as a non retina fortified tablet, but it's a better indicator than the power necessary to drive the GPU. New screen technologies like IGZO (along with Sharp's ability to mass produce them in time and without error) along with new, more efficient energy (battery) design will be necessary to release a same size mini with a retina screen IN the current form factor, maintaining the same weight.

Not a huge deal though...obviously. In the USA, the mini is just now...two months after release....able to be picked up at retailers on a walk in basis. They've sold like hotcakes! Nobody, outside our little Geek realm here at MR, is clamoring for higher ppi or resolution. Even within our little club, those that have actually went out, bought one, and used it for the duration are mostly very happy with the entire package. It's an awesome device that will definitely include a retina display at some point in the future....but it's hardly a necessity if (current) sales volume is indicative of a 'successful' product

the higher end chips are more powerful and consume less battery, that's how the iPhone 5 is so thin and iPad 4 didn't get thicker

I'm not saying people aren't happy with their iPad Mini purchase, but to deny that the number 1 complaint/knock on the mini wasn't the low res screen is a flat out lie. Just about every major publication review complained about the low res screen. I'd don't think the vast majority of people would care if the battery dropped by a couple hours to support the retina, seeing how the battery last for days anyhow

i guess we'll see by september/october, won't we? see you then :)

If the next gen is just a RAM and processor bump alone...I will upgrade.
Love the hardware as is and can't see them changing the hardware for the next mini update
Having retina in the next gen would be amazing but not a deal breaker to upgrade....for me of course.

I just pray that Apple updates all the devices to have a 128 gb option. I would get a 128gb iPhone and possibly even a 128gb iPad Mini Retina. I read these forums to bide my time until a retina iPad is released so I don't jump the gun and purchase the current mini.

I purchased the 3... And gave it to my grandmother. Regardless of how I miss it, I want a retina mini. If apple doesn't release a 128 iPad mini... Ill gladly take a 64gb iPad mini and hope for a 128gb iPhone.

Why 128gb? Running out of space on my 64gb iPhone 5...

I think you would be surprised at how many people will not purchase a rMini if battery life drops by 2 hours as per your suggestion.

The mini as is without retina is still pretty good... I'd rather have non retina rather than retina that eats battery life. Quite honestly, the Mini's resolution is great.

How many here will upgrade ?

Like better camera , A6 , NFC , stuff like that

Current ipad mini users will you upgrade ?

Oh and same design & weight

When the ipad mini 2 comes out, a quad-core A7 will be out at that time, so the ipad mini will be "outdated" again with the A6. Anyway, if they put a retina on it, i will consider selling mine to get the new.

I value how thin and light weight the iPad Mini is.

The screen pixel density is higher than the iPad and iPad 2, so the text is a big improvement over those devices.

If adding retina makes it thicker, and heavier -- then I'll hold off upgrading.

I actually like the iPad 2 better than the iPad "4" I have right now. The iPad 2 has better battery performance (lasts slightly longer, charges 2x faster) and is thinner and lighter. I only notice the performance difference when running some games.

I really hope that the iPad "5" can slim down to the thickness and weight of the iPad 2.

If Apple evolves the iPad Mini in the same way it developed the iPad -- I'll be disappointed. The size and weight are the killer feature for the iPad Mini.

once they see how dramatically the better the screen is I don't think it would matter

the iPad 3 had little worse battery then the iPad 2 but no one really cared once they saw the retina screen

I've seen the retina iPad, and own a mini. The screen is good enough on the mini. If the retina screen is going to make the mini thicker and cost battery I will be disappointed.

Apple will probably introduce 128GB in the large iPad as a way to differentiate it from the Mini. There may not be space for 128 in the current Mini.

that's what I was thinking as well. They will differentiate between the mini and the big ipad with size to sway people.

Mini ipad- 16, 32, 64
Big iPad- 63, 64, 128

Honestly guys; the iPad mini as is, is freaking awesome.. The resolution is perfectly fine because of the amount of pixels..

I have an iphone4 with retina and there is very little difference.. Retina will eat up battery life too.

If Sharp can produce enough IGZO displays with low power consumption then we might see a retina mini this fall. I have no idea if these things are in production.

The mini blows my mind. It runs stone cold. It feels cold to the touch at all times when I use it and has very nice battery life. That along with it's small footprint makes it a great device. Sure, I'd like a retina display, but I'd never want to sacrifice any of the previous for the latter.

i hadnt really thought of this, but it is always much cooler than my 2 ever was

There is no where to go but retina for the ipad mini 2

The current ipad mini is using ipad 2 specs , after the ipad 2 came retina

While a Retina display on my iPad mini would be nice, I really don't think it necessary in the slightest. No matter what Apple throws at the iPad mini 2, Retina Display or otherwise, I'll definitely be skipping it. I'm very, very happy with mine.

Anyone else think that when the iPad Mini with Retina comes out it'll replace the iPad 2's spot?

Starts for $399 for 16GB.

maybe they'll drop the price of the non retina to $299 instead of $329.

Everyone expects the retina Mini to have 2048X 1536 resolution like the ipad4 but I think Apple will engineer exact to 1536 X 1152 resolution making 300DPI as the retina mini resolution. Why ?. Normal eyes cannot tell the difference between the two. The 1152 is 1.5X normal which means gpu will be pushing HALF the pixels as normal 1536 retina. ie 1.7Mpx vs 3.1 Mpx. This means an A6X with two 544 Gpus will be enough to maintain performance levels. That might eat 20-25% more battery but it is still fine for the mini with same battery level, unless Apple figured out how to put more wHr power into the same space!.

Price points. Here would be the kicker. Apple will price the entry one at $449 for retina Mini!. Here is what you get extra: New cpu/gpu, 1GB RAM, new screen, potentially 8MP camera upgrade. That all worth $120 extra ?. You betcha!.:D

----------

I won't get a mini until it has retina.

If you used one for a Day, it will change your mind!. It did to many. The paper specs did little justice to its real life quality. The display is just amazing compared to other tablets and I do not mean the resolution but the color quality and pixel closeness. If you read about 12 inches from the screen you cannot see the pixels but just nicely formed fonts. It is surprising but true. On video, the color correctness makes it a real job to watch movies. Even the speakers are decent, although muted in the normal Apple way.
