The iPhone 5 is already too large for my hands - I'm unable to reach the top row of apps with my thumb without risking dropping my phone. If they increase the screen size without increasing the case size I'd be happy with that, but if the casing becomes any larger I'm not sure if I'll be getting another iPhone.

I don't think you understand aspect ratios then. ... If they went taller with the same width, ratio would be something strange like 18:9 or a 16:8

I think 4.5" or 4.7" would be good.

Edit; Just performed some quick measurements on my iPhone 5 and discovered that Apple can easily accommodate 4.5 inch display as per rendered image provided by tazuki without increasing the physical size of iPhone 5

So far based on the polls people here most people want a 4.3 inch screen or a 4.7. I voted 4.7 because my HTC One is the perfect size its not a phablet yet but its still not small so that I think is the perfect size, sadly its hard to do one hands operation but using two hands isn't bad.
I think the only people who don't want a bigger screen have abnormally small hands. I don't even have very large hands but I can use the HTC One just fine with one hand although it does take a bit more caution to ensure I don't drop it when I am reaching for the notifications bar with my thumb. For the iPhone 5s I think a 4.5 inch screen would be great.
Thats why I think it would be perfect to have a 4" iPhone 5c and a 4.7"-5" iPhone 5s (or 6 and skip the s)
I went with 4.7 .. half an inch was a close call for me but i think that .2 makes all the difference without it becoming a 5 inch screen which just seems like way too much
4.3, I've got a Nexus 4 which is 4.7 and it's too wide for my hands. The iPhone 5 is oddly tall, they should have just jumped to 4.3 or a full inch bigger at 4.5.
