Nowadays I would call that an analogy that simply lacks relevancy. The most popular cameras out there are smartphones and most of them are iPhones. Smartphones have become the number one way for people in general to capture and film their moments.

To deny the very fact that a camera has become one of the biggest selling points for a smartphone is simply ignorant. One of the many reasons why iPhones sell so well is because of the fact that Apple has always delivered great cameras for their respective time.

I see you've taken umbrage at the sports car and trunk analogy.

How about a sports car and the hood ornament?

Cars are the number one way people get around in this country. To deny trunks are a big selling point of cars is simply ignorant.

But in general if I know I need good shots, out comes my dslr and l-lenses. But I wouldn't base an upgrade decision on one feature.

Right.

This has nothing to do with what you would base an upgrade decision on, it's about the fact that cameras on smartphones are a big selling point for people in general.

Not to mention that 99% don't have their DSLR and their lenses with them at all times, unlike their smartphones.

no, I can't find any alternative to Apple's products that I would want to pay for...

The camera on the 6 & 6+ are one of the best on the market atm, if the 6S came with the same camera then i don't see a problem with that, maybe they add OIS to the standard 6S which would be an improvement in low light.

As it stands 8MP is more than enough for any smartphone, I rather have 8mp and a decent quality photo, than 16 or 20mp of mussy over processed mess.

Hmmm...

Buying a phone because of it's camera is like buying a sports car because of it's trunk.

I dunno, man. For a ton of people, taking pictures is the #1 thing they do with their iPhones.

Lots of selfies.

I think a better question would be "How can Apple improve the iPhone camera in a way that matter to your photos?"

I have an SLR with a few thousand dollars worth of lenses. Mind you, not a random collection of trophy lenses, but the lenses that I chose to keep over the years from all the lenses I bought. So these lenses are worth every penny to me.

Yet, on most occasions, my iPhone, used to be a 5 now 6, camera is sufficient for what I want to capture.

So for me, the current iPhone camera is fine. It's not about the specs, but the results.

However, if Apple decides for some reason (I can't imagine) to increase the pixel count to say 21 megapixel, then I may consider NOT getting the next iPhone as it would result in a lot of wasted space.

Finally, someone said it...

Yup! Cameras in such a thin phone will not be vastly improved by simply upping the megapixels.

I figured we all knew that by now.

If the 6s is exactly the same as the 6 (which I highly doubt), I will just stick to using my 6. I will not leave Apple just because no improvements were made on the new iPhone model.

This. If there isn't much of an improvement then I'll wait until the iPhone 7 before I upgrade. However I'm happy with the camera on my 6 plus. Overall it's the best camera on a phone I've ever used. It's good in all settings, particularly low light settings.

The camera is plenty good enough as is. Ive been a pro photographer for 10 years. Megapixels mean nothing really, its a marketing gimmick. Having a camera with a lot of megapixels is really only useful when you need to crop into an image but you still need it to be high enough quality for print at 300dpi. I seriously doubt your average smartphone user is taking pro photos for print. Its all about the image processor and the lens and the iPhone has the best in that department IMO. I would never dream of switching to Android to get a few more megapixels on a phone camera, thats just silly.

OP, I'm not sure what you mean by clearer. And if by faster shutter you mean higher light sensitivity, then that's the one thing I always want improved.

+1. and why would anyone leave iphone just because of the camera. that's a lame excuse. if you want good camera then iphone is not for you. get dslr, having a camera on the fly is just a bonus.

While I agree that cameras are a big part of what people use and want to have on their phone, I would say that many many of those people rarely check or even really care about particular details/stats of the cameras, just as long as the camera is basically there is more than enough for majority of typical users (which represent majority of the consumers).

And that's basically done with a much more inferior front camera, and vast majority of the people who use it are just fine with it despite it not being a great camera (as far as what the back camera is like or what today's cameras in general are like).

I think we're both on the same page. I'm not arguing against that. I don't believe regular users really know or care about the details regarding cameras apart from that fact that Apple now has a very good reputation of delivering competent cameras in their smartphone.

The rear camera is fine. However, I do take issue with the lousy 1.2MP front facing camera that's been there since the iPhone 5. Whether you like it or not, selfies are here to stay, and the low-res front facing camera is not cutting it anymore, considering many Android phones are moving up to 5MP and wider angle front facing camera. Yes, megapixel is not everything, but when you have a low-res 1.2MP camera, anything higher is better. I hope Apple put at least 5MP for the front facing camera of the 6S.

Agreed it was too low on the 6. I forget what the 6s turned out to be, but I disagree it has to be ≥5. 3MP would be fine if you ask me. Or 3,125 or whatever it'd have to be to match the not pro iPad's resolution. Let's say 4.
