shouldnt it be flush with the rest of the device now? Or is it just the camera is better so needs to stick out regardless?

I’ve never liked protruding cameras think they look awful.
I'm glad there is a camera bump.. it's the easiest way to tell which side of the phone is which when you're outdoors at night. The home button helped, but that's gone now.

No one here will know the reason.

The "look" has never bothered me, I just ignore it. Kinda like the notch and the red dot, after a while you just no longer see it.

Red dot? I actually still hate the notch. I also hate the fatty McFataśś weight and size too. I hope this is Apple setting us up for one of those “We are proud to present you with the world’s mostest thinnest phone... EVEREST!” moments. The Xr will make whatever’s coming next (as long as it’s not bigger too) feel svelte. When I use my iPhone 6 now it feels thinner to me than my iPhone 5 did on the first day I got it.

Red dot?

I don't follow this logic at all. Just press the wake button because you are going to use the phone anyway. But each to his own.

I also saw some odd argument for the notch being great because you can then tell if the phone is upside down or not...

The bump is an annoying "feature" that makes people want to crack the wallet for a case/cover. I don't see how it can be justified otherwise. I don't think the bump is something Jony Ive would approve unless there's a link to increased profits. I think people should be wary mixing up design compromises and great design.

Exactly. I've seen the "how do you know how to orient your phone" argument for the notch as well. As if the wake button, or charging port do not exist.

The "red dot" is in reference to it being on the Apple Watch crown.

Well, it seems your opinion is different than mine.. and that's ok :)

The problem (for me) with the camera bump being in style is that one day it will be out of style. Nothing, except for classic design elements (for any particular thing), stays in style for long.

By the time Apple decides that this design element is out of style and starts making devices with the camera flush to the casing again, I will have long since been gone to Android with no intent to ever return.

Now I and a few others are in a minority with this camera bump thing, but eventually that will switch. When that happens, it will be interesting to see just who defends the camera bump and to what extent.

You talk like this is such an important issue and like you're not putting a case on it anyway.

Also you describe something as banal as this as if it were something much more serious. Get a grip...

Now I and a few others are in a minority with this huge federal deficit bump thing, but eventually that will switch. When that happens, it will be interesting to see just who defends the huge federal deficit and to what extent.

Confused? Is the camera in the 4 the same that is in the XR? No. So why would both cameras fit in the same space?

Just because it is a banal and unimportant thing to you, doesn't make it so for everyone.

I truly wish that were the case. If everyone believed what I believe and I could change the world simply by changing my opinion then things would be different.

But things don't work that way.

As I have explained MANY times since signing up here in 2011, I keep my devices as primary use for 2.5 to 3.5 years and I don't sell them after that. Since any old phone can do what I need a phone to do (calls, texts, email, light web browsing) then my major purchasing decision is based on design aesthetics. Many people buy based on features or other qualities which are secondary to me.

So, for that entire length of time I keep and use a device I want to like what I am looking at.

That makes this important to me.

So, while banal, not serious, not an important issue to you - it is to me. And obviously to OP who went and made a thread about it.

You can shake your head at me all you want, but no one here can call me out on ever having made a thread for an issue I KNOW only matters to me or a few others. I only respond with my opinion in relevant threads.

Look at it this way. Lots and lots of people here have an issue with the notch and many threads have been created over it. The notch is as much a non-issue to me as the camera bump is to you.

Camera sensor is huge compare to 4. Then you add 6 element lenses + sapphire cover.

In tear downs, there is no empty space behind/under camera system to say that the bump is a “design choice”.

Plus OIS.
