The older models I agree, but I think the newer MacBooks (with the ventilation arrangement along the spine) are designed a little more with this type of use in mind. After all, Apple sell this stand in their store -it would be pretty reckless of them to promote & sell a product that could cause damage to a MacBook when used. I know what you are saying though. The wifi performance takes a huuuuuuge dip when the MacBook is used this way.

No it's not a good idea even with the new Macbooks.

A fairly misinformed statement. Apple has allowed their machines to run in clamshell mode, they even have a doc speaking to using the machine like this. So no, it's not a bad idea at all. I ran a PowerBook like this for 4 years. No issues.

I wanted to make an app that allowed an iPhone/iPad to be utilized as a dashboard (like iStat) for a particular machine either through USB or network, and of course it would be multiple platform and enterprise ready for data center folk.

In the same boat with the app I wana make, only got about 2 semesters of C programming done, and didnt finish college so Im going to get some books I think, the app I want to make shouldnt be too hard though to design.
