Maybe Windows 7 will come with a beautiful, unified GUI, some sort of search feature that makes finding anything on your computer as intuitive as walking or talking, maybe some kind of dock to make getting at your most commonly used applications as quick and easy as possible, maybe it will be based on an architecture so sound as to make worrying about viruses as passe as poodle skirts... Maybe Windows 7 will allow the use of multiple virtual desktop "spaces" to keep work and play organized and some kind of automatic backup feature to keep your data from ever being lost...

If only there were some way to enjoy these "features of tomorrow" today... oh. wait.

OS X 10.5....... since October, no less. :apple:

I'd definitely put it on my HD if it looked really good, but I much prefer the 3rd party apps I get for OSX, so it would likely not force me to switch at all.

However, while I'm sure some things in W7 will be better than their OSX equivalents, it seems insanely unlikely that by ~2012 (when I guess MS will release W7), Apple will not have blown our minds. Touch looks like it will be the future for consumer computers, and Apple's touch advances so far have looked much better than MS's.

Like a poster on the first page, having used windows and other microsoft software for a long time, I don't actually have much faith in microsoft at all.

I would give windows 7 a look, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Comparing windows to OSX, using windows is like wearing a straight jacket.

I would, but it might have to be quite a bit better for it to be worth the effort. However I doubt it would be better.

I like Mac OS X, but Windows is a great operating system, too. At the end of the day, it wouldn't be about which one is better, but which one makes me more productive. If that's Windows 7, then so be it.

No, specifically because all my software is already the Mac version and the expense of rebuying it all would be too great to warrant a switch. I also know the Mac OS very well and have been using it for years, thus I wouldn't want to switch in the first place.

But windows 7 is probably gonna come out when 10.9 comes out lol
Windows 7 is planned for a 2009 release, whereas 10.6 hasn't even been announced yet.
Windows "7" will not be any better then the numbers that proceeded it.
Matter of opinion, of course. There are many, many people who'd never even touch a Mac because they vastly prefer Windows.

Also, keep in mind that while Windows 7 will likely pull some new features from Leopard, 10.6 will take features from Windows 7, as well.

I will likely always have a few Windows machines around. I have a Windows media center chugging away upstairs for one, but I doubt I will ever have a Windows primary computer again. My experience on the Mac has been that good.

It is planned for 2010, and it will likely fail to meet that, unless its just a skin for Vista.
Oh, it used to be 2009. They must have moved it up a year. Anyway, it most likely will meet that date, in fact, Vista is the only Microsoft OS that more or less hasn't been released on time, and that's only due to the fact they were too ambitious with it, which caused a lot of cut features and a code freeze that ultimately meant the entire thing had to be start over. The problem was Vista tried to be revolutionary, not evolutionary like most OS releases. As Windows 7 simply sounds like the next OS, there's little reason it won't be released in 2010. Windows 95, 98, ME and XP were all released in the year they were promised.

MS have claimed it may be revolutionary, especially as far as touch UIs go.

Also, without Gates at the helm, they have no leadership strength.

I hate to diss microsoft, then be accused of being a blind fanboy. But, Microsoft has claimed their OS would be revolutionary severl times havnt they?

Whatever happened to the wow starting now in vista?

ok just kidding i understand that, that was simply a marketing slogan but still. My point is microsoft usually falls short of what they claim their product is gonna be.

If you need more examples think of "the iPod killer"

...As to Windows 7 being revolutionary in touch UI, I cant say anything against microsoft cause they have yet to prove they cant sucessfully make a good touch interface, yet they still have hardly proved they can do it either. (Microsoft Table I dont really take into account, cause it's something that will probably never take off, cause its impractible to have a giant table, and to require cameras and correct lighting, etc... )

Where as on apple's side, apple has slowly been acquainting the entire world into the touch interface that apple seems to be aiming for. First apple hit us all big with an unexpected mutl-touch interface on the iPhone. Now apple is slowly easing our everyday computers into using it, with multi-touch pads on new Macbook pros and Airs. I think 10.6 will use the multi-touch in the new macbooks ALOT more heavily, and 10.7 I think will not only use it for just about EVERYTHING, but could also come with a whole new redesign of the laptop/maybe even desktop. IN SHORT I expect macworld 2010 or 2011 to be BIG. Like size of the iPhone release big... maybe even bigger.

One more thing I have to say, is its entirely possible microsoft is working on some HUGE, advanced brand new touch interface, and they are keeping it one giant secret like apple kept the iPhone the secret, and maybe 2010, they will release it along with windows 7. Microsoft generally isnt the type of company to do that... but then again they've been starting to do alot of things apple does lately, so ya never know. 😉

*Lots of great suppositions about multi-touch*

Sorry, but I didn't want to re-sift through your post to find your best points, and I don't need to do that to make mine.

I think that Apple will indeed incorporate multitouch into OS X further, but 10.7 won't be reliant on it.

OS 11 will.

Apple will finish out the OS X series with it being virtually the same as it is nowm but adding multitouchesque features into each of their applications in turn and the OS X GUI itself.

The real revolution will come when they redefine the very meaning of the term GUI with OS 11. I believe that OS 11 will take advantage of full touchscreen input across the board. There will be legacy support for a keyboard and mouse (yes, the mouse will be LEGACY), but to be able to utilize the OS to its full extent will require you to familiarize yourself with the new multitouch GUI.

Let's see... October 2009 for 10.6, June/July 2011 for 10.7... Apple won't go to 10.9. They may very well end after 10.7.

OS 11 in Dec 2012...... and Windows 7 one year later with "Surface Home Premium for End-Users" 😀

No Way and No Way.

Pointless oxymoronic question.

I would switch to Linux or Solaris if the commercial apps were there (no WINE crap).

Multitouch isn't good for the desktop really. You have to move you hand far too much for my liking, it would get old fast. Also the advantages of a real keyboard are more important when the buttons can be a decent size.

With an iMac G4-like form factor, you could switch between the two input methods with little hassle, and enjoy the advantages of both..

Yeah, thats a great idea I never thought of that. But for fullscreen touch iMac, the G4 design would be just about perfect already. Maybe a little tweaking to make it so the screen can even go low enough to be just about lying on the desk. Good thought 🙂 Lets hope apple thinks of this too, I always LOVED the G4 design, (im even on one right now 🙂 ) I was a little sad when apple moved away from the design in G5's.

You make some more great points, Only thing that im unsure of is. 2012 seems like a long ways away until a full touchscreen Mac of some sort... i mean it's not that far away when you consider that apple may write almost an entirely new OS, and GUI then 4 years seems quite short. But on another hand, apple already seems to have this touchscreen stuff advanced so far already in the iPhone. They have ALREADY got an SDK for multi-touch out.

I mean in some aspects everything you said adds up and makes perfect sense, but in some other views theres unsurity (yea i just made that word up 😛 )

One other thing is, I've read that apple already announced that they wouldnt move on from OS X for another ten years (this was said at around the launch of leopard)

Although, those things change, and moving onto another full version for touch GUI makes PERFECT sense. The first number of OS versions should be reserved for "revolutions" ... so IMO thats where OS 11 fits perfectly.
