I have ipad 2/mbp 15/ipod/droid X

when I go long trip, I bring everything.
when I go somewhere quick or visiting parents or something, I will grab droid x and ipad 2

At home, mainly uses mbp 15 for work related but for reading and games and movies, I use ipad 2.
While laying in bed, ipad 2 works like a charm.
Not to mention bathroom.

so.. yeah.. there it is.

Out of my 3, a 21" IMac, 13" MBP and an IPad, my IPad sees more use than the other two combined. It sits in a dock beside my bed, it serves as my alarm clock, radio (Pandora) Weather alerts with radar plus it's close so it's what we spend most of our net time on.

I love all 3 dearly but if one had to go it would be the IPad even though it's used the most. The other two could take the IPads place but the IPad couldn't replace either one of the others.

  • iPhone - Always with you, only thing that makes calls.
  • iPad - Hyper portable, does almost everything iPhone can do and almost every basic thing a MBP can do.
  • MBP - Portable, does things iPad and iPhone cant do, not much more as far as basic consumption though, and its on a bigger screen for focused power working etc.

So iPad, what it does is it overlays on the middle ground between both iPhone and MBP and does those things slightly better.

The iPhone doesn't have a big readable screen like the iPad so any web browsing or emailing in bed that you might have done on the iPhone, is now done nicer on the bigger screen. Same touch, same handheld portability.

The MBP doesnt have touch screen so you have to use the cursor to move and its not as satisfying. So for the things you used to do on the mac and not on the phone, like watching youtube or other various browsing activities that benefit from a larger display, iPad is nicer, more natural, and intuitive.

Making calls and managing contacts is best on the iPhone, everything else, the iPad is better

Doing serious work like any editing or serious computing, PC gaming, and power using, is best on the MBP, but everything else like web browsing, reading, watching youtube is best on the handheld touch screen iPad.

So its not so much that it is redundant, but rather that it overlaps, and improves certain catergories of experience.

Its worth having if it doesn't break your bank. To me 850 dollars is a couple hours of work so its definitely worth it. If you need to save up for 3 months, probably a phone and laptop is what you gotta live wit.

you make 850 dollars...in 2 hours?

Funny I use my iPad 2 to read about the cool things my new mbp can do.

I use it to surf and as I am a musician there are quite a few music apps that I mess around with. There is a use for both.

This winter I had an iPhone 4, an iPad, and a MacBook Pro all at the same time. Of those three products, the iPad came first (spring), the iPhone was second (summer), and the Mac was third (winter). I ended up selling the iPad and I've been quite happy with that decision. The iPad was essentially useless after the purchase of the MacBook Pro (believe me, I loved the thing, but it was useless) The iPhone is more portable than the iPad and the Mac is more powerful than the iPad. Basically, my iPad had no place. I would recommend that you don't buy an iPad if you already have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.

I too have all three, and realistically, if I'm honest. No. There isn't a reason for you to use the ipad. The macbook does browsing way better than an ipad can (that's for sure, when you're at a desk and maybe even when you're on the couch). The availability of a keyboard at all times is good to have (for MSN/ichat/skype/what have you). Also, browsing is much faster with multiple tabs open (you can't quite do that on Safari yet, and apps like Terra web browser have been pulled). The laptop just does things better + faster,

For sure the ipad offers more portability than a macbook pro and the larger screen (comparative to the iphone 4) is a good advantage, but the device is awkward to use in bed unless you've got it propped up on your knees. When I'm reading articles in bed and lying sideways the iphone always is more comfortable to use than the ipad.

At the end of the day, we live in a world of excess and that's the truth. I happen to have all three devices, so I might as well use them. But for my student life style, the ipad isn't necessary.

Jesus this was a poorly worded/thought out post.

i have all three phone & Ipad 1-& Macbook Pro laptop and use them in diff ways

the ipad is use as a basic device to keep with me when traveling and i do not have to break down the MacBook Pro laptop with accessories items on the desk i use in the apt ..

because of all the application have on the ipad it use more as a device to keep track of things when i seaching the library data bases for info on a something that i own or playing a game or listening to music when i'm out in the middle of nowhere or traveling ..

plus i love the screen size on the ipad for looking up things on it compared to a smart phone screen size

the phone is basic a phone device that allow me to keep in touch with the family through the calling them and getting directions when driveing .

the Macbook pro is the main computer in the house ..because if i need to do some work or need to find some info on a subect or shop at my flavorite website for good i like or browse websites like this one or reading emails or watching movie on it ..it is the one i use to do all that because i know in the end the ipad and the phone are ok but it does take the power of computer to do the things i need to sometimes on it ..

so my personal needs are broken down into three areas -1 areas is useing the ipad and it applications for travel 2-the iphone is

I have all 3, and I use my MBP daily.

When I travel, the iPad comes along as my main device. I typically don't travel with my MBP unless I know I'll have work to do while away.

The iPhone is more phone to me than anything, so it sees use as a phone and email device.

I use my iPad as my e-reader as well.

I will also eventually use the iPad as a sync device while traveling. I use the camera kit, snag all of my pics for the day, then upload them to my cloud drive. That is all set up, I just need to be able to bulk upload photos from my iPad to my drive.

Do we know if it is a 2 way sync? You run out of room after dumping photos and start erasing them...will it erase them on other devices? If not. The idea won't work for me. I don't need 3 diff versions of each photo.

I have an iPad for use when commuting and traveling; it's simply easier to hold and share with people; I can open up something full screen and demonstrate things to people on the iPad; with the iPhone, the screen is too small and trying to show people something on my MacBook Pro is too cumbersome. Sure my iPhone I carry everywhere and my MacBook Pro is a lot faster than the iPad, but overall if I wanted to show something of importance on the go, with the iPad, it's a piece-of-cake.

Personally I would only buy an iPad under this single condition: Inkling (e-textbook app) is able to provide me every single textbook that I need in going to college, at least for the first year.

I don't want to be too redundant and say what others have said so I will keep it short. It's a nice complement, but it's not absolutely necessary. Save your money.

Even though your mbp sort of covered many things, I think you still need a portable and handy device. I dont think it is a good idea to always carry mbp around.

Have zero desire to go the tablet route right now. The itouch MacBook combo is Perfect for me
I can't afford it for one(working pt time now) and two, I prefer the touchs display and size over the iPadS

I have an iPhone 4 which I use to do my data and messaging on the go and obviously calls. The iPad is what I take with me for everyday purposes such as work, some side courses, wife's work and what not. MBP is what I mainly use at home to do hardcore work such as CAD, 3D modeling and designing, coding and programming and etc. which cannot be done on the iPad or the iPhone 4. There are times when I need to use the MBP on the go (I also use it for photos BTW) so I connect via my iPad.
I am trying to find a good application that allows me to connect remotely from the iPad which doesn't drain out my wallet (if you're going to comment "dude you have 3 devices why do you care about $30 logmein ignition - then please don't). Teamviewer works well but cannot do WOL.

hopefully icloud will make it easier for you than when it comes out...whenever lol

There is literally nothing you can do on an ipad that you cant do on a macbook pro. There are about a thousand things that you can't do on an ipad that you can do on a macbook pro. The only thing the ipad is good for is reading non-flash content in a thin and portable device. But, seriously, a macbook pro is also thin and portable.

My girlfriend is starting law school and we actually decided to get her a iPad instead of a MBA because she is able to use the iPad with greater ease and when she syncs her apple BT keyboard she can type papers just like she would on a desktop/notebook. I cant wait to see how iOS5 is going to improve the iPad, things like having tabs instead of lots of windows will make the iPad vs computer gap even smaller and with most things going to way of HTML5 I think the flash issue will become nonexistent with time.

What? How do you do research on westlaw/lexis and then type out a paper on an ipad? Multitasking is pretty weak compared to a real computer and you cant put two windows side by side. The only way this would work is if you printed out all the cases ahead of time and then used the ipad like a typewriter...but honestly that doesn't sound very efficient.

no mouse. as long as your gf creates flawless docs the first time, or doesn't mind gorilla arming it trying to edit, the ipad can replace the laptop. it sounds like a nightmare to me.

the ipad is great for first drafts. the ipad is great as an ereader ( i have thousands of pdfs for my research and it has been a year or more since i carried a library book in my backpack). in conjunction with evernote (clip and email pages), the ipad is great for pulling content out of databases and storing it.

i use it every day in conjunction with my mbp. i use it alone on trips or in a pinch, but it doesn't stand well on its own for long periods.
