Hey, good for your friend. She's lucky then. She should play the lottery. Let me reiterate this in a more positive light: I have an iPhone 5s in a drawer that has the top left corner off the frame missing from a family member that I'd rather use than a 7 if it came to it.

Although the jet black is the best finish apple has made to date besides ceramic for the watch.

None of my friends that was and still using a 7 complain about anything. None that I read about before as well.

The jet black color though, I read many are pealing off. It does looks good.

Well, for people upgrading from pre-iPhone X iPhones, I can definitely see that the gesture based system can feel a bit strange, but once you get used to it, I’m sure you’ll appreciate it more. Personally, I love it, and I can’t see gesture based navigation going away anytime soon... I’m sure you’ll adapt soon enough 🙂

I upgraded from a 6 to 12 mini, one of the reasons is gesture navigation. Never use it before but imagined it will be great, and it does! Love it. So quick to jump in between apps and to go home screen. No necessary force to push a physical button. Only thing I miss is touch ID on certain conditions.

The iPhone 7 was hands down one of THE WORST phones apple has produced engineering quality-wise. The cellular modem fails in every one of the US made A1660's, and then if you get it repaired it fails a year or so later. Some of them are 4 years old and don't even qualify for the free repair program anymore at this point.

The audio chipset also randomly failed, leaving you with no ability to use the speakers and microphones. And, the quality program for that ended a long time ago.

I would not take an iPhone 7 from someone if it was free and I was on fire. The 8 on the other hand, fixed all of the 7's problems and improved the design.

It was a very reliable iPhone though. My company issued loads of them to sales staff, managers, directors and I can’t remember a single instance where we had to contact Apple because of hardware failures. Even now I know of so many still in use and still going strong. Perhaps the US model was the crap one?

Once you go gesture navigation you never go back. 😎 that hideous home bar that we can’t hide is another story. 🤦‍♂️🤮🤢🤬

iPhone 7 did have a problem with the microphone here in Aus, few people I know had to go back to apple for a free replacement phone because of mic dying, apparently apple knew about the issue and we’re giving out free replacements

seen a few iPhone 7 still going strong, still a more than capable phone for 2021.

My daughter has one, just got a replacement with apple care as she dropped it in the toilet lol, warranty runs out in April.

I want to have a smaller offering even if that was not the flagship, a mini if you may, except that this mini is too large. I think it should have been 4.7.

I don't have a problem with bezels, we have lived with them through all laptops, tvs, and cellphones for decades. Surely beats having an irregular screen but everyone is different.

Enjoy the SE. Made for you folks complaining about the mini. Joking aside, this is a classic iPhone as you know it with better internals and a compact size. Might be a better fit for some.

Just purchased an iPhone min (as emergency backup) as 6S battery faltering. Will likely get replacement battery (2nd) and save 6S as the future backup. Under normal circumstances would have merely had battery replaced at store.

Why buy a mini as a backup for a 6S? You could have gotten an SE 2020 for half the price instead, plus could reuse all of your 6S accessories with it?

We've got 3 iPhone 7s in the household and apart from battery issues, all 3 still work fine.
If you keep them, make sure they have backups. If they experience the cellular issue, they will need to be sent out to be fixed, and erased beforehand.

Again, to re-re-itterate, even if it's working for you (and if it is, great) most all iPhone 7s suffer from the cellular issue, the audio chipset issue, and potentially no-power issues from main logic board problems. There have been repair programs setup to address these issues. Because of this, and the track record of the device, this shows a significant decrease in product quality. As I said, the 8 solved most if not all of these issues, save for a few early 8's that had no-power on issues.

Yeah, that’s it. If you have a iPhone 7 model A1660 which were mostly sold in the US, then that’s the one that will have issues. If you got lucky and got a different model then it should be fine, what I’m saying applies to the us models only.

Case in point with iPhone 7 (and 7+) is that they're on their last legs with iOS updates. They get iOS 15, maybe iOS 16 at most. After that you're on your own and Apple would brand them vintage, then obsolete immediately. Then what?

Smaller phone but a larger screen with blistering speed and instant face recognition. Best of both worlds. Did also buy SE but gifted it.

I upgraded from iphone 7 all the way to iphone 12 mini(4 years). Its not worth it. If you have a newer device its even worse since you will see less benefit.

Everything works just the same and while performance is snappier its not $800 snappier. Also if you are a notch hater and home button lover dont. The phone is also heavier and thicker than iphone 7. You are way far better off with SE.

The only people I would recommend to upgrade to the 12 are the following:-
1-You have to have the latest and greatest

2-Camera is most important part of the phone for you, every pixel count

3-You want the most powerful chip to run the greatest and most demanding apps.

4-If you feel iphone 7 screen is too small

If you are a smartphone user who uses social media, emails, web browsing, phone calls...There is no reason to upgrade. If you have to upgrade get SE or wait for the 13 if you feel just fine with the current phone.

What's going to be different with the 13?

I think that's the Verizon/Sprint model. Our AT&T iPhone 7 is A1778. In any case, the 7s have been replaced anyway (with SE2 and 11) and have been delegated to backup status. Back when they were in use, they got regular iCloud backups. Mine also got an iTunes backup prior to firmware updates.

That said, I don't think the issue affects most iPhone 7s. I have a Verizon iPhone 7 for work that's still OK. Quite likely, the issue affects a bigger percentage than normal but not the majority and some usage patterns are more likely to trigger the issue. Apple sells what, 200 million iPhones a year? Even having 5-10% of iPhone 7s affected probably equates to 10-20 millions devices with the issue. Which is a lot but far from being majority.

Hmm. My friend still loves her 7+. I'll have to tell her she's crazy because someone on the internet said he wouldn't take her phone if it was free and he was on fire.

I'm sure that will make her happy.

Not to mention that if I was in the midst of a fire and someone gives me a phone, I'd use it to make a 911 call, not throw the phone back at the person saying, "Pssh!! That's an iPhone 7! I refuse to use it!" Wildness of remarks here can be entertaining.

How long does Apple support iOS versions? I know the old iPad I have (like...8 years old) is still getting periodic updates for iOS 12 (which is hella impressive btw)
Just updated my iPad mini 2 to iOS 12.2 the other day. . . It runs most things slower than molasses. But I use it primarily for reading or watching movies at the gym. It does both of those things wonderfully.

[…]Fanboys will hate me for saying this but from what I saw the LCD is better. I got iphone 7+SE2 (LCD) + iPhone 12 mini(OLED). The Mini has a yellow screen/hue. The 7+SE2 has beautiful whites. They say "OLED has deep blacks". I don't see it. When you put them next to each other and give direct attention to the blacks the OLED is dimmer but the difference is meh. I rather get display with correct colors than like 3% darker blacks.

Maybe there are 12s without the yellow screen, but yellow screens have been an issue with Apple iOS devices and there are traces of it since like iphone 4.
I don’t agree with the above as my son updated from a 6s+ to an iPhone 12. There was a huge difference overall, including the Oled screen. Maybe you didn’t like the way your screen was “tuned”, but the screen is excellent according to him and me.

I see. I must have misunderstood your previous post, as I thought that you bought a mini it as a backup for your 6S with the ageing battery.

I understand that. I have a similar problem. I love that size for holding in one hand but with two hands it's quite strange for me personally. I would love to have it in this body a little bit bigger. New regular 12 is big for me but mini is sometimes small for me. Not too small, just small in contrary to XS I had before. I now really love the weight and one-hand-use size. I think that this year Apple made me undecisive. 😀

I doubt people can operate the modern phone sizes with one hand, as a smartphone should be operated imo. historically people used cellphones one handed. They used to make them smaller, now they make them bigger. According to this my hand is an average size. I can't reach the four corners with my thumb. I can't reach to drag down the control center and reach the home bar. I have to crawl up and down the phone.

I upgraded from an original SE (the one in the 5S body) to a 12 Mini in November. (I don't like big phones so I had been holding off until a smaller design came along). The upgrade for me has been a huge one in every respect. The phone is faster, takes better pictures, and just seems to work a little better in general, especially with many of the programs I use on it. I've been pleased overall with the upgrade. The battery also works better, although I could be saying this because I had an old, well-worn battery on the SE by that point.

iOS...well, it's still iOS 7 with new features. I still miss the old design of iOS 6 and earlier, which I just liked better in general and found a little more usable with fewer gestures that could be activated by accident.

Didn't you feel the 12 mini screen huge especially coming from 5S size?
I was one of the people who wanted to jump into a new more modern OS over the old OS 6 design, but along the line we list simplicity. Current iOS has a lot of hidden stuff under hidden stuff and secret gestures. I can't call it easy. I myself how to look up the web to find how to do things on it. So the average joe is clue less.

It was a very reliable iPhone though. My company issued loads of them to sales staff, managers, directors and I can’t remember a single instance where we had to contact Apple because of hardware failures. I will give that to Apple. Very solid devices those iphones. Reminds me of the Japanese electronics of the 80s/90s. It just keeps working. I don't know how things are on the Android side.

My daughter has one, just got a replacement with apple care as she dropped it in the toilet lol, warranty runs out in April.

How is that Apple's problem? Is Apple Care like a phone insurance or extended guarantee? I never understood people who bought these especially for iOS devices. Hardly hear something goes wrong with them.

Enjoy the SE. Made for you folks complaining about the mini. Joking aside, this is a classic iPhone as you know it with better internals and a compact size. Might be a better fit for some.

Actually I got an SE. Its a fresh of breath air. After looking at both screen sizes the extra screen on the min is just a filler. On Twitter for example its just filled with grey color. When you use the keyboard there is just a block of grey at the bottom.

What's going to be different with the 13?

Surely improvement over the 12, so if they are willing to wait they might as well stretch it to the 13.

Just updated my iPad mini 2 to iOS 12.2 the other day. . . It runs most things slower than molasses. But I use it primarily for reading or watching movies at the gym. It does both of those things wonderfully.

I never understood how this works. I swear when we got those devices they were pretty quick. The original iPad was a bit slower but I imagine its no where near usable now. I know they make new apps more demanding but sometimes its just the same task feels a lot slower.

Still use a 7+ 128 JB. Don't have many issues, albeit it does hang up occasionally. Thought about upgrading to the 12 Pro but decided to wait another year.
imo you did the right thing.

I put the SE20 + mini next to each other. The only thing I will give the mini is that it seems sharper with more pixel density but it doesn't matter that much. To me the LCD is more vibrant. My only guess is that the 2 screen technologies have different "feel" and its personal preference. Mine is certainly yellow and sometimes feel it has greenish tint. I guess its all about adaptation.

Did i say it was lol, maybe try reading properly instead of trying to comment on 10 people at once, was just saying she still uses one and is still a good phone, Apple care + is a no brainer for teenagers.

And believe it or not if you take the eye mask off apple products can get a fault. Maybe read some threads on here to confirm.

With time positions will reverse as Apple support for the 6S will cease this year. 6S my present go to.

The biggest issue I have is using Safari. Webpages take forever to load. Not sure if it is an iOS thing or changes to the web itself. I suspect it is likely both. But web apps, like Netflix, seem to do just fine.
