I think the only genuinely dumb thing I've read here is people telling other people 'I know what laptop you need better than you do!'

If you've got the i5, great. If you've got the i3, great. As long as you're happy right?

Nobody is 'pushing' anything. What's the incentive?

I wrote a fair bit about what it was like for me having the i5 versus the i3. The only reason I wrote about my experiences was that it's information I would have liked to have before I made my purchase, so hopefully those anecdotes and tests help people like me.

Nobody here gets a cut of Macrumors ad revenue or Apple sales bonuses as far as I know. It's just people trying to help people.

And the occasional 'I don't have a personality so my choice of computer brand defines me, and any criticism [real or perceived] of that brand offends me deeply' person. I was going to say 'troll', but I don't think it's deliberate.
It is odd how people use inimate objects as part of their identity! Heavens knows what's going on in their heads and basements. I thought your reviews and advice have been fantastic! So again to you, and @fracer thank you so much!

(I am speaking generally based on ten years on MR and thirty five years IT experience. I’m not referencing anyone)

Some folks need external validation that they made the correct choice for their individual needs. This can manifest as a strong proponency towards directing other to make the same choice they made.

While there is no financial motive, there remains a self validation motive with those individuals

Think that's a very astute and likely accurate observation. Think there's something pathological about some people thinking their needs (requirements) are the only ones and if people have differing use cases - then that somehow reflects on them and their identity perhaps. It's complex, but you put it succinctly - thank you for that ☺
Cheers have a good one!

Same reason I got the base CPU 2012, it was good enough for my use and has been for the last 8 years. Only reason I bought a new Mac now is because the battery on my old one is completely dead and I needed a little bit more storage (better screen and Touch ID is a bonus too). That’s it.

Trust me, for many the base model is “future proof” enough. It’s just that they don’t know it yet. 😊

I have a 2012 MBA base model and it runs 15 fine, and does MBA things great. Every now and then the 4gb is bit of a hangup but its not noticeable.
