If you connect MBP to an external display, do you see the exact same thing on both displays?

Or can you use the MBP display like a second display?

Either way. In display preferences you can set it to Mirror so both displays show the exact same thing, or when it is not set to mirror you have two seperate displays. I frequently put my photo editing tools on the laptop display, leaving my external display for the image I'm editiing.
